  • Following some naughty (not) remarks from here, I went to another gallery of the #ThinkCentre rabbit hole. Quick and dirty look at #FreeBSD, #NetBSD and #OpenBSD power usage on the AMD powered M715q. #RunBSD https://www.tumfatig.net/2026/m715q-power-usage-and-the-bsdes/

  • Considering I like to listen to white noise or generated rain sounds when I sleep. I wonder if I can get an old radio with an external antenna connector and build and esp32 that simulates rainsounds and emits that as FM over a wire? Feels doable but all this so Google can't listen to me while I sleep. The current solution is a google puck that has a lot more features and invasive qualities than I need.

  • Funny enough, I hadn't listened to the radio, real FM, in quite a while. It was completely by accident and by request of my partner I got something from a garage sale. Within hours I had 2 things to do over the weekend. Your mileage may vary but local radio has become something of immense value. The ads are local and often they promote community activities. I could be the last to the table but go listen to the radio.

  • If I was Salesforce I would be scared of IRC. The best thing about the 80s and the 90s is the internet was pretty cool back then. Better yet, all those things from then are still running so if you get tired of Slack or Microsoft Teams, you can host chat for your entire 1000 person org on a raspberry pi now. It had bots and automation with API integration in the `00s. Oh yea search would work just as good. No search vs useless search...

  • Finished reading "Alien Clay" by Adrian Tchaikovsky I found the world building novel and the commentary around the fear of isolation and the safety of orthodoxy. I would skip this read. If the author intended the protagonist be a self-indulgent "thinker" obsessed with the value of a human in reaction to being an outsider on the run for a year. It felt more like blather. When contention entered the plot, we unfortunately glossed over the character development...

  • Today, I went to the mall, it was packed. I got a cheap coffee in the food court were a group was playing magic the gathering. I bought a stack of DVDs and didn't see many smart phones. I think things got so dumb in '25 that everyone broke and just reset to 2010.

  • AI -> a morally devoid product like a razor blades marketed to 5 year olds LLM -> an ethically ambiguous technology that is only as evil as how you use it.

  • '25 was a big year for me, I stopped googling and started reading. You might think I was reading LLM chats but it was books. The googling ended because it stopped returning valid results, the chats stopped because of the gas lighting. Feels good and the books are better. Now I can decompress and get back to the small web.

  • Officially Claiming the name: Sex Panther for the name of my eventual LLM orchestration framework. IYKYK.

  • Why people worry so much? Just put CAPTCHAs on important bits, those let only real humans through. AI apocalypse averted! (Is that too dark of a joke? I don't know. Have darker.)

  • You look at the design of the aliens in #Babylon5 — mysterious Vorlons, basically evil Shadows, Roman-looking Centauri, etc. — and think that it’s too on the nose. But then you look at Garibaldi and think that he’s the kind of guy who would have a podcast (yes, in *that* way). Life itself isn’t so subtle. (Explanation: Jerry Doyle, the actor, had a podcast. Yes, in *that* way.)

  • If you believe that any actor can play any role, how do you justify casting?

  • Pheature fone.

  • I don’t know about planes, but if you can walk away from assembling furniture, it’s good assembling.

  • It’s fun to think that the suspension of disbelief was invented. It’s difficult to do that with theater for obvious reasons, but you can compare old and new fiction books. Nowadays, you’re immediately in the story, go-go-go. Back then, there would be a justification: Who is the narrator? Why are they telling the story? What is it about? Who it is intended for? An unskippable tutorial, if you will. And the language would not conceal the artificiality. It’s *a story*, there is *a narrator*.
