@jwz@mastodon.social Mine, Phillips I think had lasted several years but I don't use it often so maybe that's why. I just use it about every six weeks to turn a full beard back into stubble.

@jwz@mastodon.social philips oneblade is amazing, it's another tier above any other electric shaver I've used

@jwz@mastodon.social I’ve had a Norelco Aquatec for 12 years, still working great. My previous lasted at least 15 years, I think. Replace blades when they get dull enough to make me remember, every couple of years

@jwz@mastodon.social I've got a Philips from 2007 that I'm still using. Keeps a charge for a week and I replaced the blades on it a few times. Perhaps those were better quality than the newer versions.

Braun shavers are still pretty good. The cheapest ones (series 3, for example) are shit and produced in China, but more expensive ones are still produced in Germany. Worth the money IMO.

@jwz@mastodon.social Since models change over time I assume what you are really after is testimonies from say 2-3 years ago, but: I bought a Braun 720 in 2011 which I think I only replaced this year. (It's not impossible that I bought another Braun 7-series in between but I don't _think_ so.) I have always been pretty lazy about shaving so it wasn't being used every day. Its ability to hold a charge did decrease over the years but even at the end it wasn't at the point of "stops taking a charge". (The new one was bought too recently to be a candidate answer to your question, but FWIW its batteries show no obvious sign of degeneration after 6 months of, again, not-daily use. This one's a Philips i9000. I suspect its power button, which feels rather flimsy, will die before its batteries do.)

@jwz@mastodon.social My current Braun Series 9 is 4 years old and going strong. I bought it to replace my previous Series 7 because the (non-replaceable) battery was starting to die after 20+ years. Otherwise it was still working fine.

@jwz@mastodon.social don't charge it for a while and then try again. My Philips had issues when I charge it everytime on its base.

@jwz@mastodon.social Back when I used electric shavers, I avoided ones that used batteries, since corded ones lasted for far longer.

@jwz@mastodon.social I’ve had good luck with Panasonic shavers. My receipt says I bought this model in 12/2023 and it’s still going, although at roughly 30% battery capacity. https://shop.panasonic.com/products/arc3-3-blade-mens-electric-shaver-beard-trimmer

@jwz@mastodon.social I have the philliphs oneblade, but it's old. The battery has worn out significantly since I got it, but it will still run for about thirty minutes straight when fully charged. If you have tried a new one & it failed so quickly, but my old one still works fine, maybe that means they switched out the battery or charging circuit to a cheaper crappy one for higher profit, as big companies like to do.

@jwz@mastodon.social This is the reason I buy one which takes standard batteries (and then use rechargeable standard batteries). Yes, they have a lower power than a denser builtin battery, but I've had two shavers and two beard trimmers in my life (in my 50s).

@jwz@mastodon.social My Braun shavers have lasted like 20 years each. I just replaced my last one with a series 8 (because I could no longer find decent replacement cutting heads). I hope the battery in this one lasts at least a decade. I remain optimistic.

@jwz@mastodon.social I legit stopped shaving daily in 2015 because of this. I don't even use a cordless beard trimmer anymore. All I can say is good luck.

@jwz@mastodon.social Braun from Gemany that lasts already 35+ years. However, YMMV.

@jwz@mastodon.social The one my grandmother got me for my 15th birthday only died for good last year. But I did have to replace the battery twice, which wasn't a trivial process.

@jwz@mastodon.social I'm on my third set of blades for my Norelco. It's gotta be close to 10 years old. But current models could be crap now. idk

@jwz@mastodon.social I got a Braun Series 9 at Costco figuring I’d be able to return if it stopped working in a reasonable time frame; 2 years later and a battery charge still lasts like 3-5 weeks of daily use. I don’t leave it on the charger/cleaner, only charge it when needed I used to hate electric razors and shaved with a safety razor for a few decades, but it’s become harder to do that as I age, and this is a huge improvement over the electric razors I tried in the 90s

@jwz@mastodon.social I had a Wahl that recently died. Took it apart and the broken, unfixable plastic clip inside really should have been metal. So maybe don't get that one.

Replies seem to be split between "This shaver has been in my family for generations, my grandfather smuggled it out in his ass" and "I buy a new one every 6 weeks".

@jwz@mastodon.social I don't grow hair, but the house human uses a plug-in edge trimmer and single-blade disposable razors. Whatsisface gave up on electric shavers in the late 90s. Edge trimmer gets you to 5 o'clock shadow, and the disposable to baby smooth, if desired. It has to be single blade, otherwise keratinous debris clogs the spaces between blades and prevents further shaving without a water jet to clean it out. And plug-in because battery lifespan has always been a problem.

@jwz@mastodon.social Yes. I had a Philips Norelco that lasted for at least 15 years (lost count). It was only in the last few months that the battery stopped holding a charge. I've since replaced it with a Remington foil shaver, 'cause Costco had it on sale -- still not sure how I feel about it. I also had a Wahl rechargeable beard trimmer with interchangeable heads, which I liked because the blades were sharp and it worked quickly. That lasted about ten years, but stopped turning on a few months ago.

@jwz@mastodon.social I usually turn to the Reddit Buy-it-for-life group: https://www.reddit.com/r/BuyItForLife/comments/wzdpo/bifl_request_an_awesome_electric_shaver/ https://www.reddit.com/r/BuyItForLife/comments/1wb5l5/bifl_request_electric_shavers/ Then, I'd turn to The Wirecutter: https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/reviews/best-electric-razor/ Finally, I'd start looking at vintage gear. There's probably a reason Granddad's razor is still going. So buy one of those. (FYI, I use a blade, because no electric has ever managed to do a good job on my beard. So I've got nothing but references.)

@jwz@mastodon.social Regardless of the lifetime of the battery, they clearly figured out that by making the shavers *NOT* run while plugged in, they will sell a lot more shavers. 😭 I picked the shaver with the **slowest** charge speed, because fast charge kills batteries. That's probably overkill but I also try to avoid charging it fully every time. My small trimmer OTOH is old as f*** with dead batteries, but I can just plug in the charger and it'll just work.

@jwz@mastodon.social I had a cheapish Braun that used their auto-cleaning charging base. I would run it after each shave. That lasted something like 5 or 6 years. I'm currently using a much fancier Braun Series 9 that I've had for 2 or 3 years. It's still going strong.
