Friend of the fam… Arriving in the United States in the 1990s after working as a family physician in her native France, she found that doors quickly opened for her. She earned her Ph.D. at Tulane University, conducted research at the National Cancer Institute, then spent more than 20 years at UC Berkeley, where she co-founded a center studying how to prevent blood cancers in children. But this year, frustrated by the Trump administration’s cuts to science funding and attempts to censor researchers, Metayer embarked on a reverse migration, leaving UC Berkeley for the Université Paris Cité in France. There, she leads an international consortium for childhood cancer research and receives support from a French government program specifically aimed at scientists fleeing the U.S. The center she started at Berkeley — which examines how environmental factors influence children’s leukemia risk — is gradually winding down, she said. https://www.berkeleyside.org/2026/10/26/uc-berkeley-scientists-moving-abroad-trump-research-cuts
