They _created_ a shit-storm for a woman who had to be _extradited_ to North Dakota because, like you said, she'd never fucking been there. How does _anyone_ in that chain of responsibility not have a single moment of pause? Hooow? That's not fucking possible. That goes _way_ beyond incompetence.

@mcnado@mstdn.social @Gargron@mastodon.social That woman deserves 5x that amount of money, if not more. And yea, fuck those cops. But don’t default to blaming the “AI”. Facial recognition software has been around for decades but is generally unreliable. The reason she was wrongfully arrested is the cops fed a fake military ID to the system, not the actual surveillance footage. Had they sent actual pictures of the actual robber into the system, the outcome would have been dramatically different. This was entirely malicious incompetence by humans, and I hope she wins every penny she’s going after. (MAJOR EDIT- post went out with “generally reliable”, when I meant to type “generally unreliable” - apologies!)

@mcnado@mstdn.social Once you’re arrested you should have an opportunity to stand before the judge who will ask if you understand your charges, etc. Not surprising that under MAGAt management a judge (s) are also incompetent. Those w power hate all of us.

There is a LOT of false imprisonment going on in America, and DNA exonerations are soaring and are proving that scientifically.

No offense intended but this is brilliantly funny. To be clear, this woman went through hell to satisfy fascists and $10M is no way near enough for her troubles. She needs to break the bank. And the detective should be fired. And in jail.

@mcnado@mstdn.social facial recognition algorithms work on a fairly standard training set, in a similar way to how the brain does. You've ever been to the grocery store and say "That person looks so familiar! Where do I know them from?" Only to discover you've never met them. The same thing happens with these models. The brain itself doesn't even have facial recognition, it has feature recognition. And these models work the same way. It's VERY unreliable.
