@lain YAY for RSS. I have been happily using it for centuries ( maybe even longer)

@lain rofl (true, but I still rofl'd)

@lain Do you have a link to this article? I'd love to share it :)

@lain I loved how the author stated this "problem" with such certainty, then immediately after seemed to realize that readers don't actually want it solved, and tried to justify it by claiming there's no other feasible solution besides making advertisers happy. As far as I can tell, no matter how happy you make advertisers, they won't pay enough to keep publishers afloat, so who cares what they want?

@lain Feedburner (eventually bought by Google) did some tracking on RSS

@lain Not tracking people is one of the best features to have, right?

@chartier@toot.cafe 2019-01-10 22:07
@lain I tried searching a bit but can't find this. Could you share a link?

@lain you can track but it is more difficult 😉

@@lain@pleroma.soykaf.com I've seen RSS feeds using tracking pixels before.

@lain@pleroma.soykaf.com Eh, I don't get why some people want analytics so badly. Before the internet, there was no analytics, and we lived, and the companies were making profit. So why do they need analytics now?

@Michcioperz@a.nom.pl 2018-04-09 07:52
@lain@pleroma.soykaf.com @Wolf480pl@niu.moe oh no you have to ask people for comments to know if they read

@lain@pleroma.soykaf.com It's funny because for all their data and optimizations I find that newssite ui's consistently lose to rss reader ui, and consistently lose to download pdf and scroll through it.

@lain@pleroma.soykaf.com How much of Google's revenue is directly related to the fact that many people with websites don't know how to parse their own server logs & perform simple statistics on them?
-
@a_breakin_glass@cybre.space 2018-04-09 18:16
@lain@pleroma.soykaf.com the worst failing of RSS is that you can't spam mastodon timelines with it :^)

@meff@niu.moe 2018-04-10 17:37
@lain@pleroma.soykaf.com Well the author qualifies in the next paragraph that analytics pays the bills. I agree that they don't spend enough time defending that viewpoint, but as of now a huge portion of the internet runs on commoditizing analytics and data.
