Why the f2k do smoke detector batteries only fail late at night when the shops aren't open?

I know, I'll just disconnect the smoke detector until the morning. Except this is an interconnected system and now the rest of the system is beeping once a minute because there's a missing unit. I don't know what I did to piss off the universe but it is obviously displeased with me this week.
