@whynothugo editing it in vi feels like the appropriate level of ceremony to us, a chance to celebrate getting the project to first-commit status

@ireneista I use $EDITOR only if I'm going to write additional lines. But usually if a project has a lot of working code for its "Initial commit", I'll be squashing lots of "ok so far" commits.
