This is neat. A handy reminder of how you can be identified and tracked across the Internet without a single cookie ever being set in your browser. #privacy I didn't set a cookie. https://kuber.studio/cookie/

@RockyC@fosstodon.org Nice demo of how fingerprinting works. It did get many of the details wrong, which doesn't matter for fingerprinting, but made it feel less scary.

  • @RockyC@fosstodon.org I've tested it with Tor-Browser on Linux and Android. I got "roughly 1 in 120.0 million browsers look like yours." in both cases. Did anybody else try with Tor-Browser?

@RockyC@fosstodon.org It said "this page asked for zero permissions." That's an outright lie. It asked to create a webGL context, which my browser (Librewolf) let me decline. And it got a lot wrong, including my computer type, public IP address, screen resolution (twice) and trackpad. So I'll sleep OK tonight.

@RockyC@fosstodon.org It is impressive, but I dislike how the ideas are expressed.

@RockyC@fosstodon.org this site needs javascript to work. But i am sure some of this information does not. "You wiped sessionStorage, window.name, but localStorage, IndexedDB, Cache Storage still held the tag."(edit: later after waiting for the addon to actually clear it, it was just Cache Storage) Cookie Autodelete failed me? Turned out deleting cache storage was disabled, but enabling it is not fixing it so far.. It's also annoying because probably it might be done without javascript also? (like add a unique url to be cached and see if it is there?) Also my bubblewrap sandbox could hide fonts i guess? Bit surprised Librewolf has cross-site referrers on by default. I turned on letterboxing, it did get some info wrong based on that. (maybe for sites i like, i want to give referrers in order to promote them lol)

@RockyC@fosstodon.org I always run browsers in a VM to protect core system security, and connect via a VPN. This site didn't make a very good fingerprint. ๐Ÿ™‚ The typing fingerprint is impressive, though.

  • @RockyC@fosstodon.org This also means that you can fingerprint your visitors, salt and hash the fingerprint, and get unique visitor counts and recognise visitors without having them log in. And the salt means that your visitor's data are not trackable across websites. We don't actually have to give everyone's information away to advertiser's and data brokers.

@RockyC@fosstodon.org neat. So ironically if I want to anonymity myself I could use a more common or default browser. Would tweaking that for added safety get me less identifiable? Interesting question. My fingerprint was 1:1.3million. If I assume east coast eliminations, does that mean pretty much 100% identified before attaching tracking pixels?
