@Sheril@mastodon.social Thank you for saying this. Just yesterday I was thinking that public polls are useless*. They should stop. News outlets should stop reporting on public polls. Deprive polls of the attention/"oxygen" that sustains them, and maybe they will go away for good. *Any reasonable rebuttal explaining how they benefit society is welcome. Maybe I'm missing something?

@Sheril@mastodon.social @chazh@mastodon.social Agree 💯 The death of polling is a good thing - it only ever served as a paralyzer of the actual democratic process and a brake on activism. #excitingtimes

@Sheril@mastodon.social I voted last week and got confirmation my ballot was delivered! 😁 For all the other Oregon voters out there - be sure to put your ballot in a drop box by 8 PM on Tuesday, November 3 (tomorrow) It's way too late to put them in the mail! Drop box locator: https://sos.oregon.gov/elections/pages/drop-box-locator.aspx #Oregon Elections #Vote #VoteByMail #GOTV

@Sheril@mastodon.social It's worse than that, I think general polling is no longer possible given fragmentation of the media space and direct distrust/willingness to lie in response to polling. The well has been poisoned, I think the methodology is fundamentally broken now. Trying to apply weighting factors and algorithmic “fixes" just turns polls into modeling with whatever biases the pollster or poll commissioner have. Averaging a collection of things like that will be useless.

@Sheril@mastodon.social @c_dan4th@mstdn.social I learned that lesson in 2016.

@Sheril@mastodon.social 100% ffs 2016 was a decade ago, there is zero margin for complacency.

@Sheril@mastodon.social Yeah. Some of us remember Nate Silver and the Clinton/Trump polls.

@Sheril@mastodon.social i'm worried that people thinking it's the bag will get complacent. Even if it looks safe, you don't want your voice to be the missing one.

@Sheril@mastodon.social I’ve always wondered, do good polls self-adjust for people voting for candidates they’re, say, embarrassed about voting for?

@Sheril@mastodon.social Well that is a prior (very small sample in most cases) snapshot of what are you going to vote (or voted in the few weeks) before the final date of voting.

@Sheril@mastodon.social When I entered the political world nearly 40 years ago, I wished the media would stop paying attention to the polls, and that if they did, then maybe people would. They're not even really useful inside politics, let alone for the electorate. Such a bad idea generally.
