Decades of the wealth class pushing for privatization of essential services such as education by slashing budgets of public services. Those individuals also just so happen to have stake in those private entities. The result is a populace who isn’t educated enough to know that they’re trapped in an endless grift. And the stupider someone is, the more emotionally reactive they are. So we’ve got the people pushing the culture war shit who know that they’re full of shit, and the hapless idiots that pass along the message thanks to being tricked into being scared of their fellow man for inane reasons. Toss in organized religion, and baby you got an ignorance stew brewin!
