Sigh. Capitalism and USA centrism in #craftworld
I am in the weaving group and quite often newbie comes and asks for the tips how to start with #weaving.
One of the repeating questions is how to begin, but with limited means (money, space). Often people really don't even know if new hobby will be fun, so they don't want to spend tons of money on it.
A lot of the advices start with "visit your local guild". Uhm, ask first where Op lives? I keep commenting, that nearest guild is probably 12 hours of flight from me, as they not so popular in Europe - maybe there is something in UK, but definitely not a thing in other countries.
But even in USA, if someone lives in the countryside, nearest guild can be several hundreds miles away.
Another of my pet peeves is telling people that they should buy tons of the expensive equipment just to start.
Someone wrote, that they want to make belts. Yeah, you should buy inkle loom (at least 70€).
Someone wants to try weaving. Yeah, buy rigid heddle (150-200€). Or table loom. Or best, start with the floor loom, where for decent loom prices start from 1000€ and you need a lot of space at home.
No. To start with the weaving it is enough to have few sticks (if you want to try belts, few pencils will be enough) and a bit of strong yarn to make your first loom. Use a bit of cheap cotton as warp and weft and you are ready.
You may 3D print small rigid heddle, or make it out of the coffee sticks
With longer sticks you can make #andeanBackstrapWeaving loom and weave whatever you want
