Question for German native speakers: do you also try to simply learn all separable/non-separable verbs by heart or do you actually develop some sort of intuition for them? Especially for durch- which doesn't seem to have any rules?

I sometimes half-jokingly wonder if any foreigners actually learn German, or do they also just get by somehow? Like, I know a guy from the USSR who went to school here, and he still doesn't speak well.

@creepy_owlet@mastodon.online Almost all of first language learning is not 'rote learning' as we all (usually) finish this around the age of four. As none comes readily to my mind, do you have an example for a non-separable verb with prefix 'durch'?

@creepy_owlet@mastodon.online I wonder how people learning English learn the phrasal verbs. Just a huge amount of memorization? Blow up, blow down, blow out, blow in, and blow over are all different.
