I wonder if, on average, “free speech” will be nicer purely because instances are smaller. The #fediverse could have the same number of members, but because they’re organized in small faux communities, it will be harder to be a jerk? - higher risk of being ostracized/banned on your own instance if you misbehave (easier to be nice to “real” people than the entire internet) - admins can define and enforce stricter policies with less scrutiny (house rules are easier when the house is small)
