@unchartedworlds@scicomm.xyz @JoBlakely@mastodon.social @afewbugs@social.coop basically all fibres we use for making clothes are a sustainability disaster to varying degrees. Cotton uses obscene quantities of water, and is often grown in highly inappropriate places (see Aral Sea), wool has all the animal raising ethics and environmental issues, esp as these days the sheep raised for wool, are not the same as those raised for meat, so your jumper is no longer a by product of lunch. Then we move onto the various manufactured fibres 1/n

@unchartedworlds@scicomm.xyz @JoBlakely@mastodon.social @afewbugs@social.coop stuff like viscose, rayon, etc... are all in theory "natural fibres" in that they are derived from cellulose, usually from waste products of other industries (timber, agriculture), except to make it there's so really nasty chemicals involved and there's a lot of places where the management of that chemical waste is a environmental disaster in progress. Stuff like polyester, nylon etc... that are basically woven petrol (very generalised) are 2/n

@quixoticgeek@social.v.st for lack of better options, I’ll continue, as much as possible, to buy second hand clothing. Also, a very big plug here for UK folks for VINTED. Good stuff, second hand, fairly priced. #vinted @unchartedworlds@scicomm.xyz @JoBlakely@mastodon.social @afewbugs@social.coop @mothninja@beige.party
