I only rarely bothered with those books - in this specific context, my whole family got into its subject matter together when I was a wee lad, and we had a great time without the book. When one of us had a breakthrough we’d call everyone else in. Fond memories.

That book is waay a better written work of fiction than it has any right to be given the subject matter. I love it on its own merits separate from the work its based on.
