I go around on this one. I tried to write that so it didn't sound guilt-tripping (useless as a motivator), but I can't stand performative activism that involves no actual effort.
But! That said, things like land acknowledgments, "Black Lives Matter" placards in white suburban front yards and so on do play a very important role in social change. They help break what sociologists call "pluralistic ignorance", where everyone thinks they are the only dissenter and so stay quiet. Speaking up, even in the most non-threatening way, tells others they are not alone in their views and helps normalize new perspectives. It also provides social proof that these are valid views.
Whether putting up a sign is performative guilt-assuaging done for the benefit of the performer themselves or whether it is an important show of solidarity is... not always clear.
