I was cycling around Lake #Tuggeranong this morning and it was a rather pleasant 10ish degrees with negligible wind, although the sun was behind the heavy cloud that pervades the skies today - I don’t think the sun will be making an appearance today. Anyway, I came across this pair of #swans with their newborn floofys. I think it was mum nearest the path because she gave me quite the look as I went past when I started riding again. #Canberra

@RHW@mastodon.au @treleanor@aus.social For-profit organisations should *NEVER* provide social services *EVER*. You can thank John Howard for introducing the for-profit sector to the Government teet. Cf Age Care, Early Childhood Learning, Employment Services, etm #AusPol

The interview with John Menadue (Head of the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet when Whitlam was sacked by John Kerr) is long but a very interesting read. Menadue is probably the only remaining significant figure on the inside of the Whitlam Government still alive (Keating was promoted from the back bench to a junior minister position a few weeks before the Dismissal and would have his own views). There is a fair bit of contrasting Whitlam versus Albanese included. I am left with the fe...

FYI - I am not ‘back’ as such. Sometimes I skim through my timeline as time permits. Sometimes I get so angry that some people have NFI that I feel forced to respond. Have a nice day :)

A reminder that the Rogue State of Israel is currently holding around 10,500 Palestinian hostages (most without charge) in their alleged prison system (being tortured and starved on a daily basis). Apparently, only the Rogue State of Israel is allowed to be armed while they insist all Palestinian are disarmed. ——- Quote: According to the Government Media office, Israel shot at civilians 88 times, raided residential areas beyond the “yellow line” 12 times, bombed Gaza 124 times, and demolis...

Please … *PLEASE* … don’t let Australia still be stuck with the monarchy *after* the UK has decided to take the sensible step to throw them out … #AusPol

Yes, you may be killed by falling human made space junk, but the odds remain small(ish) that will occur. The (almost inevitable) #KesslerSyndrome may also prevent future #space flights if all those #satellites in Low Earth Orbit start colliding, creating countless debris. However, we *ALL* have to worry about the ‘chemical problem’ being created by SpaceX et al in the upper atmosphere. I have been banging on about this for a while and the attached article summarises the science in an easy to...

@troberts@theblower.au I measure heat waves by the minimum temperature - if it doesn’t go below (say) 18 Celsius overnight for a few days then that is a heat wave by my reconning. Yes, the day time will be a lot hotter, but if it doesn’t cool down overnight then there is no recovery/reprieve from the heat and that is when it really gets you.

@troberts@theblower.au @fletch@mapstodon.space @david@theblower.au I tend to say Adelaide in the same way that Madonna sings ‘Celebrate’ … but not when I am speaking to someone from 🎵 Adelaide 🎵. They don’t seem to like it. It is Gareth Reynolds fault (from the podcast The Dollop*) as he started it. * The Dollop is an American (sometimes Australian) History podcast in which comedian Dave Anthony reads a story to his friend/nemesis comedian Gareth Reynolds. Five stars, would listen to any e...

@troberts@theblower.au @juliew2010@aus.social The summer solstice this year is at 2:03 AM on 22 December and that will be ‘the longest day of the year’ as measured by the total daylight. Thereafter, total daylight each day starts getting shorter (admittedly by only a second on 23 December but it then steadily picks up the pace each day). However, it is not as simple as the sun immediately rising later and setting earlier from the solstice onwards: · the earliest sunrise occurs at...

In the lead of this newsletter, Amy Remeikis asks the question that has been on my mind for months … what is it Labor is waiting for? Certainly, as Amy notes, Menzies, Howard, Whitlam and others would have been reforming by now. Why not the Albanese Government? Worth a read. #Auspol https://australiainstitute.org.au/post/what-are-they-waiting-for-between-the-lines-newsletter/

@troberts@theblower.au @ketan@climatejustice.social I would suggest a far more accurate title … STOP TALKING ABOUT THE LIBERALS.
