When someone posts a link and someone else responds "paywalled" what is the responder hoping to achieve? I am genuinely curious.

My entire view of the tech industry is shaped by my friend who used to develop the iOS app for Lyft who told me the company would become profitable once they stopped having to pay drivers. He seemed upset about...having to pay the people who made the company possible.

Is it normal for an attorney to spend his time haranguing clients to pay 2-week-old invoices? Or did I hire a huge asshole?

"60 Minutes" ran a segment last night on Havana Syndrome and the device US intel agencies bought that reproduces the symptoms in animals. Which means today across the internet you will find one million comments calling the people who developed these life-altering health problems sedentary alcoholics. Totally normal and organic, I'm sure...

It's hard for healthy people to imagine what this is like...I spent about 2 years almost 100% bedbound and it is hell. Showered about once every 10 days because that's all that my energy budget allowed. Some people in this severely ill state experience partial spontaneous recovery but some certainly do not. Headline: Former Olympic sprinter in bed 22 hours a day with ME/CFS. #MEcfs #disability https://athleticsweekly.com/news/beth-dobbin-i-feel-like-ive-lost-everything-1040013690/

Started watching this Netflix show called "Below" and everyone's face looks like it has been sandblasted or botoxed to the max. So many plastic people wandering around the harbors of Newfoundland. #TV

Awesome! More free outs for the Brew Crew. Ohtani is an amazing hitter when healthy but he's clearly not. #baseball #NLCS https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/50177824/ohtani-dodgers-game-3-nlcs-lineup-roberts-says

So there's this big leak of Cartoon Network internal files going around and I was curious to see what I'd find from my favorite show there: Harvey Birdman - Attorney at Law. Found these 1967 character sheets for "Birdman" (Hanna Barbara character) and enjoyed seeing this tidbit: AVOID BACK VIEWS, WHEN UNAVOIDABLE FAKE THE WING CONNECTION TO BACK. I always knew cartoons were fake. #CartoonNetwork #Birdman

People really don't know what to do with, "I developed health problems and wanted to live somewhere nice" when they ask why I moved to Kaua'i. I used to fudge the answer (I'm a Midwesterner and making people uncomfortable is kinda against the rules there) but don't bother anymore. Ask a personal question, get a personal answer.

Hating on governments is fashionable (often for good reason) but I am so, so, so pleased and impressed with the County of Kaua'i's response to Hurricane Lowell. The twice-daily updates are full of important and useful information. The county has knocked down pervasive and malicious rumors. They have kept everyone posted on restoration of power and water. They've clearly stated what is and isn't open. Our mayor, Derek Kawakami, will soon be Hawaii's Lt. Governor and will b...

Saw The Odyssey last night at our island's last remaining theater, a 1930s art deco building now run by a local non-profit. Pretty much a full house for the last of five showings over a week. I enjoyed it although...during bright scenes I wanted to walk up to the screen and smooth the wrinkles. Also: "Dad!" seemed...a tad informal for the palace and it made me snort a piece of popcorn up my nose. #TheOdyssey #film #movies

One of the smartest and most knowledgeable people I know, who is an MD, uses ChatGPT *constantly* in his daily life. He visited me a few months back & was asking it everything about our trip, about whatever topic we were talking about, using it to plan another trip... This guy loves learning and has spent decades constantly learning stuff on his own in many areas (he's also an app coder) and I think the LLM feels like a shortcut to even MOAR knowledge and information. Pretty sure this...

I think (and hope) Gianni Infantino is going to get booted from FIFA. Quick recap: The guy who just led the FIFA's men's World Cup to record attendance, revenue & Trump ass-licking, recently sprang a proposal to sell off the men's & women's World Cup to the Trump-Kushner crime family. FIFA is a non-profit with 211 member nations (more than the UN, as some FIFA nations, e.g. New Caledonia, are not nation-nations). It's a trust of sorts that distributes funds earned...

Kind of a niche post, but if any #scuba divers are looking into diving Kaua'i, the famous Tunnels dive is now off-limits to commerical operations. This is a fairly recent change inside Haena State Park; no more permits for any commercial activity. Divers can still dive there but tours and paid guides are not allowed. A local guide just confirmed this to me. I would NOT recommend swimming or diving into the maze of lava tubes without an experienced guide. It's...a complicated system of...
