Step 1 of the de-Proton-ing process has been completed. Set up new email provider ✅

People of appdot.net: if you want this place to keep going, you need to support it. We can't expect @superjosh to finance this place out of his own pocket. You can contribute here: https://tinyurl.com/supportappdotdotnet And if you're on another instance, support your own admin. They have a big job and this stuff isn't free.

Huge progress in the de-Protonization effort today. Got seven of my domains (yes, I have a problem) moved over from SimpleLogin to the new email provider, just four more to go. Also eliminated most of the SimpleLogin aliases as part of that. More complicated will be implementing a new password manager and VPN. I’m using Proton Authenticator but it’s not connected to my account, so I can put that off. And I’m not sure what to do about Standard Notes. At least I never used Proton Drive. #proton

One of the positive things that has happened as a result of the need to de-Protonize is that I'm finally cleaning up some messy domain stuff.

The last of my custom domains has been removed from Proton and moved to their new home. Progress... #proton

I don't want a HomeView. I don't want a smart home, or a smart hub, or any of that. I don't want anyone to be able to hack into my refrigerator and set it to 50C. I don't want anyone to be able to set all the lightbulbs in my house to glow purple. I don't want my thermostat exposed on the Internet. I don't want ransomware on my clothes washer. I'm perfectly capable of turning on a light switch, setting an oven temperature, and starting the...

Doing some organizing of old digital files and came across some plaintext Twitter archives from the Before Time. This one jumped out at me: 2007-04-16 12:29 So much insanity in the world...God save us all So nothing much has changed in almost 20 years, I guess.

I know some people look down on it as "Linux for Beginners," but damn if Linux Mint doesn't just work. It's impressive. #linux

“There was a desert wind blowing that night. It was one of those hot dry Santa Anas that come down through the mountain passes and curl your hair and make your nerves jump and your skin itch. On nights like that every booze party ends in a fight. Meek little wives feel the edge of the carving knife and study their husbands' necks. Anything can happen. You can even get a full glass of beer at a cocktail lounge.” Raymond Chandler got the feeling of Santa Ana winds exactly right.
