It seems to me that the last several years have demonstrated the shortcomings of FOSS as a set of organizing principles for computing, so I've developed a set of principles meant, not as a replacement, but as a corrective, and written them out as a sort of manifesto. Check it out here: https://destructured.net/casa Feedback welcome. Much thanks to @zoy@merveilles.town and @alderwick@merveilles.town and @neauoire@merveilles.town for theirs.

What's everyone like for a #GameDad handheld? Anbernic is sorta looking like the most popular choice.

"Put simply: each small moment of convenience – be it answering a question, turning on a light, or playing a song – requires a vast planetary network, fueled by the extraction of non-renewable materials, labor, and data."

I log on and see amazing visual artists exhibiting their latest work; indie devs building their own software ecosystems; writers and scholars talking about their latest research; designers showing the progress on the games they're making; people just feeling out ways of living that work for them in a world that is too often hostile to idiosyncrasy. The network doesn't have to put me in touch with every artist or dev or designer or writer or scholar or iconoclast in the world, just these.

"Scientists say older animals often play several critical roles in how populations function, broadly falling into three categories: ecological knowledge, reproduction, and immunity. They carry knowledge that guides survival, play outsized roles in producing the next generation, and possess stronger defenses against disease built up over time. Together, these qualities can make the difference between populations that endure and those that slowly fall apart." https://e360.yale.ed...

What exactly does everyone mean when they say Bluesky is down? Presumably it's not the PDS since it seems to be affecting other PDS too. Is it the appview? (In which case, other appviews, like Whitewind, should still be working.) Is it the relay? (Which would stop just about everything.) Do outages like this take out the other *sky networks as well?

Seems like the worst possible time to spend $1 billion in taxpayer money to prevent Americans from benefitting from wind energy, but okay. https://stateline.org/2026/03/24/trump-administration-will-pay-1b-to-block-2-offshore-wind-farms/ #politics #USPol #energy

Don't use services that feed your fediverse follows to commercial AI platforms unless they're built for consent. For example, the only way to opt out of Zeitgeist is to block anyone who uses it: https://alpaca.gold/@seldo/116229243453108157 and there's no clear indicator to show who is using it. That's not consent.

"There are examples of takeovers that produced sustained improvements in student outcomes, but they are the minority, according to research. More often, research shows the loss of control disproportionately affects communities of color in exchange for meager and short-term gains in academic achievement." https://www.chalkbeat.org/2026/03/03/national-politics-fuel-state-school-district-takeovers-in-red-states/ #politics #education #USPol

In recent years, at least eight states have funded crisis pregnancy centers using more than $100 million in funds from Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, a federal program meant to assist families experiencing poverty with basic necessities and child care. https://www.newsfromthestates.com/article/federal-funding-people-poverty-heading-anti-abortion-centers-instead #politics #USPol #reproductiveRights
