I don't get why so much Fediverse-related software has a mascot. I'm not talking about instance-specific mascots (I'm a big fan of :blobcat:), I'm thinking about stuff like Pleroma's Fox Tan or Misskey's 藍. I believe that with them being anime style, some users could feel like they're too nerdy, and extend it to the Fediverse being a place for nerds as a whole. Instance-specific mascots make sense, because with each instance having a diffe...

I think the best ActivityPub software for mainstream adoption right now is Pleroma with @soapbox. One could say it lacks carachter, which is true, but it's less buggy than Mastodon (as far as I can see) and it has a really beautiful UI, which is necessary for "normies". It could get some hints from Misskey - like the way it handles comments, which is more Reddit-like and way easier to read imo - but it's already miles ahead of others.

If you run a server at home and you care about the environment, you might want to check out my project EcoDash (ecodash.xyz), which allows you to create cool dashboards like ecodash.massivebox.net to provide your users with all the energy consumption data of your server in an easy to understand way.

Matrix is messaging. You can claim it is a "communication protocol" and build barely-functional Reddit and MetaQuest clones on top of it, but it won't change that. Adding so much interoperability, that we know for a fact will never be used for anything but broken demos, means wasting developer time that could be used to improve the client and server performance.

ElementX and Sliding Sync are game changers for Matrix. Although ElementX lacks most features, I keep using it to check at a glance what's happening, without having to wait tens of seconds for SchildiChat to sync. I can't wait for it to be production-ready.

It's like the tenth time today I've listened to Takanaka's Bamboo Vender. It's a drug.

Blogging is hard. I have a blog which has been inactive for a year, not because I don't care about it or because I'm too lazy to update it, but because I'm struggling to find any topic on which I can provide a prospective which is different or note-worthy.

I guess I'm on BlueSky now! I've just brought up my PDS and you can reach me at https://bsky.app/profile/massivebox.net I know it's a controversial protocol, and I'm still just kinda checking it out. But it seems promising. ActivityPub has a good amount of issues related to federation. New servers don't know others by default, so they have a very narrow view of the whole network until users specifically look up accounts from other servers. This is good f...
