It is done. I've gotten everything installed, logged in, and working. And it's all from an Ansible playbook, nothing done manually. The battery held up well today, giving me at least 8 hours of use. BrainFrame is built on the machine, and installed locally. And it works. I've even got some gaming possible with steam. A good day with the laptop. Looking forward to really using it now. Back to the threat modeling for BrainFrame's p2p sync layer finally. What did...

I've just spent the last couple hours working on the threat model for BrainFrame, and I'll be surprised if I get it ironed out this week. Security is a very different beast at this level, and not one I'm used to thinking of in this way. It's damned cool though. And I can already see improvements in my thinking about BrainFrame because of the time so far. For instance, I never considered what would need to happen if my phone got stolen, not just lost. What could...

And this is why the advice is not to roll your own encryption primitives. It's so difficult to get it right, and so very very easy to get it wrong. And the results of getting it wrong mean that everybody can read your encrypted data without any significant effort in this case. @h4ckernews https://mastodon.social/@h4ckernews/117520691167454605

I've had sessions that went like this. It's why I use, but don't trust, the AI. Give it a try. And remember that at least one person has gone through similar interactions. https://opusfived.dev/

This is the sort of insightful piece about how to use agentic engineering that we need. Without dragging it out, I'm not afraid of AI. I distrust it because I have seen too many ways for it go off the rails. I imagine similar discussions happened when the first assembler got written, and then when the first compilers got written. This is very similar. It's not that the changes are happening, it's that the changes haven't proven themselves fully yet. In time, the...

I just wanted to call out this guide: https://github.com/drduh/YubiKey-Guide If you're trying to set up hardware level security using yubikeys, it is invaluable. It takes some time and preparation, but the results are that you have a system where you can definitively say that your code is signed by you, your connections are authenticated as being yours, and nobody can use your digital identity but you. Even if you leave the YubiKey in the computer all the time, as long as you've turned...

Sometimes, the world gives us a little gift, a way that we can gain more happiness. For me, right now, the obvious answer would be the work I'm doing on BrainFrame. I'm making real progress on getting the sync up and running (nothing visible in any UI yet though). However, the answer turned out to be more mundane. My wife and I went out to dinner with my dad at a local Thai place that she and I dearly love. High quality food, good prices, good atmosphere, good people running the restaur...

I got to try out something new tonight. After building my new PC, and switching to it as my daily driver, the old one is looking for a purpose. I'm going to turn it into a server. That means getting another USB stick ready with another downloaded ISO. And then I remembered https://www.ventoy.net/ is a thing I've heard about recently. If you don't know of it, it's a bootable USB stick that lets you store a bunch of ISO images, and then choose which one to boot. I had a 64g USB d...

This post contains real wisdom, and it landed at a time when I need it. I'm hoping that anybody else who also needs it will be helped in finding it and acting on it. I've been known to say that you can't help others when you yourself are on empty, and here is someone much wiser than me saying the same. Take that break. We all need it. Come back recharged and better. #selfcare @selfcare@hachyderm.io https://hachyderm.io/@selfcare/117141312384877635
