If you’re an elderly Chinese person in SF Chinatown, living in a 8x10 box in Chinatown and being around your friends, walking and taking the bus, eating all the food you care about, having cheap groceries everywhere around you, having health and food services that speak your language, is an infinitely better life than living in a suburb with no one your age and nothing that reminds you of home. I don’t understand why this is so hard to understand, but over-prioritizing big homes over community...

Some days I forget that not everyone has the same gut bacteria. I am so very happy eating all over South and Southeast Asia. Not everyone in Singapore is like this. I have forged my gut of steel through three decades of exposure, constant street food eating, and just generally spending copious amounts of time in my many parts of my favorite parts of the world. My friends have photos of random aunties I don’t know in India and Indonesia putting food in my mouth. In a train. In a bus. On the...

I think Chinese vegetarian food is spectacular. They’ve been doing it for thousands of years. Lingzhi Greens in Singapore is a Chinese fine dining vegetarian spot that hits it out of the park. I always enjoy going there Their herbal soups are also very good https://maps.app.goo.gl/7GAkJdQ99ePgnzQq6?g_st=ic #Food #Singapore #ChineseFood

India is a country of extremes. The other night we went to dinner at a fancy spot, fancier than anything most places, but the power went out 14 times (I counted). The streets are full of people in luxury cars alongside people in grinding poverty. I’ve been coming here for 22 / 23 years; you see this in some places more than others. I know people in Bangalore who make so much money that would be 75th percentile in the Bay Area. But there are also people who have almost nothing. A decade a...

Reading about bland food on Reddit. In four decades of life I think I can count the number of times I have had food that might be considered truly bland.. with one hand. I intend to keep it that way

In a Chinese restaurant in Malaysia and every table is a group of 10-12 friends and or family having dinner together. Full house. Every single spot is like this (and there are lots of restaurants) I guess we don’t have much of a loneliness epidemic here. Here, you’ll have to fight quite hard to be completely alone

RE: https://mastodon.art/@petrikas/116125821528139989 Middle class kids like me can get one throw every decade maybe. I’m about to throw a dart again. I’m aware lots of things had to have happened for me to even be able to do this. Primarily that my parents without college degrees experienced a once in a lifetime economic growth story in a country that suddenly became rich in their lifetimes. And that I have a passport that lets me go anywhere i want.

Public housing in Singapore: 40-50 floor apartments on the left. Multi-storey parking on the right. Parking building has rooftop garden. Ground floor has daycare for children, and seniors. There are 5 supermarkets within walking distance, several wet markets, and laundromats on the ground floor of many buildings. When it’s rainin...
