  Sadly putting the FOSTEX R8 back in the box for a while. Play and fast forward work, but the rewind mechanism does not (so I had to the tape reels around to wind it all back again). More seriously, the 8 channels just output static and noise, when they used to at least partly represent what was on the tape. One day I will look for a vintage electronics head who might be able to restore it.... Although the tape head is irreplaceable and the rest is mostly 90s plastic junk.

  Last night I went to watch Todos Somos Gaza. The director Hernán Zin made "Nacido en Gaza" in 2014, which introduced seven Palestinian children living tough lives under colonial oppression in Gaza. In Todos Somos Gaza we meet the same people, now adults and living even tougher lives in midst of the ongoing genocide.   Theres a huge increase in custom firmwares for electronic musical instruments in the last few months, driven by AI coding tools. Everything is open hardware now ! Obviously requires care as the AI isn't going to refund you if you brick your device. But it's great to give old abandoned instruments a new lease of life. 21st century circuit bending.
