I think a nontrivial part of this is that the Internet (and now AI even more so) has given us all the superficial impression of being able to learn anything by “doing our own research.” But, of course, that’s an illusion. Usually it’s a classic “a little learning is a dangerous thing.”

But folks who are impressed with themselves for having spent a couple hours on wikipedia (or huffing straight misinformation) get tetchy at the suggestion that this is not, in fact, in any meaningful way comparable to earning a postgraduate degree
