So does anyone here know anything about embroidery machines? As in what to look for, what to avoid, bad brands, etc? #sewing #adviceWanted #embroidery

@swachter@toot.boston check out if it's compatible with inkstitch (or whatever other embroidery software you'd like to use). 10x10cm is quite limiting after you get into the swing of it. Secondhand throws up some serious bargains (in the US). make sure your local sewing shop can help service it. See if you can try some out at the sewing shop or if your local library has one.

@swachter@toot.boston all I know is that computerized models are shrines to the state or computer technology at the moment they were made, meaning they can be awkward to use. Meanwhile strictly mechanical embroidery machines have multiple types and probably a serious learning curve.

@swachter@toot.boston Get the largest hoop you can. And an automatic needle threader will keep you sane. Look for something that comes with some simple software for flipping and converting that runs on your computer. Thats seriously the only misgiving I have about Linux: my software no longer works and I haven't found the spoons to find out about inkscape. Be clear on what you want to do. Do you want to use commercial designs only, or do you want to digitise your own designs?
