Got my annual flu shot and my COVID vaccination today. Since this is the United States, hubby still doesn't have a job and we have no health insurance, I had to pay for both shots out of pocket. It cost over $450. I could fly roundtrip to visit my niece on the Eastern seaboard and pay less than I did today just to avoid getting sick. It seems... well... odd that people with jobs and healthcare coverage get such vaccinations free of charge, while those who have neither of those things are forced to pay to underwrite the costs, but hello #DeathRattleCapitalism I guess

@Soozcat@raphus.social I'm sorry you had to pay that. Yet another example showing why the US needs universal health care. Recent study for those who missed it "Universal Health Coverage Could Save $1 Trillion and 114,000 Lives Every Year, Yale Study Projects" https://ysph.yale.edu/news-article/universal-health-coverage-could-save-one-trillion-dollars-and-114000-lives-every-year/ "A single-payer universal health care system could cover every American, save more than 100,000 lives a year, and still cost $1 trillion less than the system it would replace…" #USPol #HealthCare

  • @Soozcat@raphus.social afaik, this probably varies a LOT by state, there are many many programs to offr reduced price or free covid shots to people without jobs or without money eg https://www.mass.gov/info-details/covid-19-vaccine-information

  • @Soozcat@raphus.social when you understand the true nature of this "country" things like this are predictable and obvious. The powers that be do not consider us human. We're just cattle, and for the cattle that don't work (reasons be damned), they don't get anything.

@Soozcat@raphus.social Yikes, that is expensive! It feels like a case of price gouging, as the shots don't cost that much to produce. Do you live in an area where there's only one pharmacy chain, and it can charge whatever it likes because there's no competition? Despite the outrageous price, it is good that you got vaccinated. I hope that you will enjoy good health in the months ahead.

@Soozcat@raphus.social @CelloMomOnCars@mastodon.social One shot of Covid vaccine in Japan can be found at 20,000 yens - around 130 USD. Unless you fit into specific categories (age and existing conditions) this is not covered by public or employer health insurances. You’re out of pocket. Flu at least has subsidies for everyone and some employers (including mine) cover the full expense. But the Covid vaccine situation here is really bad for the general population.
