This is a fundamental asymmetry that aids Trump & co: People & institutions believe that if they anger or defy Trump, there’s a good chance every instrument of federal power will be deployed to make their lives miserable. They don’t think Dems will do that. And they’re correct both times.

This is not something to correct, to be clear! Dems should not abuse state power for political retribution when they have it. But in practice it is dangerous to antagonize one party, and not particularly dangerous to antagonize the other.
