Today at noon in Leiden at PIDfest, I'll be presenting a talk: "Swimming in the Sea of Software Identifiers" (https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.23683097) #PIDfest26 #SoftwareCitation #ResearchSoftware

If you have experience with AI-assisted research software engineering #RSEng in an HPC context that you want to share, our BoF on the Thur at #SC26 (https://www.ucl.ac.uk/research-innovation/advanced-research-computing/digital-research-community-events-and-support/events/supercomputing-2026/birds-feather-ai-assisted-engineering-hpc) still has some room for a few more 3-minute lightning talks - sign up with a 100-word abstract on the web page.

At #pidfest26, there are two breakout sessions in the same room, using headphones that you can switch between the two channels/speakers/talks (shown by blue vs green lights on the headphones). This is new to me.

Getting ready for day 2 of #pidfest26 #pidfest, I realize that the sessions I went to on day 1 had no (or maybe minimal?) discussion of AI, making it quite unlike any other event I've been to this year.

I feel like @arXiv has gotten worse over the last few years, at least in CS. I submitted a preprint of an accepted & presented IEEE conference paper that's been on hold for about 3 weeks, and the response to my query about it is that the moderators have been reminded. This happened to me once before, and I eventually gave up and posted it to Zenodo. Maybe it's time to do this more regularly.

For #pidfest26 #pidfest, I like this snapshot from Carole Goble of a equation of trust from Charles Green, in a presentation by Cathrin Stöver from GEANT

To me as an American, this is a really odd quote: “she was also awarded an MBE for her services to darts in 2023” https://www.bbc.com/sport/darts/articles/crkg7p1z3p3lo

It's nice to get a very detailed, clearly human-written review of a paper, even if it means there's potentially a lot to change for the camera-ready version. I need to keep remembering in my own reviews that I'm writing as much for the author as for the PC chairs and other reviewers. #eScience26

Following the update of the Principles of Open Scholarly Infrastructure (POSI, https://openscholarlyinfrastructure.org) to v2.0, @joss has updated its commitment to the principles in https://blog.joss.theoj.org/2026/07/JOSS-POSI

Looking at OpenReview.net, used by AAAI. What a good example of the failings of AI... I can't update my name to how I prefer it, or to change the email address associated with a submission made by a collegue, as far as I can tell, nor can he. Also, I see a submission to another conference associated with my record that's not actually mine, but likely a different Daniel Katz. But there's no way to manually make changes that I can find.

It's nice to see this article in #HPCWire about #RSE #RSEng at #PEARC26 - I'm looking forward to talking there on Tuesday next week https://www.hpcwire.com/2026/07/24/a-home-of-their-own-pearc26-debuts-a-dedicated-research-software-engineering-special-track/

Yesterday/today might have been my worst work travel experience. I drove from Champaign to O'Hare, which took 30 minutes longer than normal (2 hrs, 15 min) due to traffic problems caused by very heavy rain and water on the road, which caused severe problems at the airport too. When I got to O'Hare, my 4 pm flight to Minneapolis was delayed to around 7 pm, along with all other flights, so I changed to the prior flight which was also delayed but only to 6, earlier than my origina...

Given that Google is currently adding to messages to the top of Google Docs/sheets upselling their own services (I opened a sheet today and was asked if I wanted to use Gemini for phone calls, I think), I wonder how long it will be until we get third-party ads embedded there too, maybe specific to the content in the sheet/doc.

During #FOR2026, I learned that I should read "Thinking like a business: Reconfiguring relationships to sustain open data infrastructures" by Kathleen Gregory and Dorothea Strecker (https://arxiv.org/abs/2604.27580), which takes a political economy-based look at Dryad

I've had a good few days at #FOR2026 (https://opensciencestudies.eu/for-2026-conference/), where I was on a panel, saw a bunch of people I know, and met even more people I didn't know, and then went to the bi-monthly meeting of the Munich RSE #RSEng chapter followed by a nice dinner, and am now ready to go home

It's interesting to me that no one yet (of the first 5 speakers at #FOR2026, a conference on open research) has provided a link to their slides. There's a bunch of interesting things here, but it's hard to follow-up on non-published (non-open?) slides
