The British don't speak German like that. Translation isn't just about precision. It's also about audience. A British character in a German translation often doesn't sound British. They sound like a German person's idea of a British person. The same goes for Americans. German audiences have cultural expectations about how British and American people speak. They expect certain rhythms, certain jokes, certain kinds of politeness, a particular flavour of sarcasm. And translating dialogue means navigating those expectations without turning the characters into cultural caricatures. You can't solve this by sprinkling well, mate and bloody hell into German sentences and calling it a day. That's not localisation. That's a fancy dress party. You have to understand what the dialogue does. How a British person uses understatement. How an American expresses enthusiasm. How politeness, humour, irritation and intimacy work differently across cultures. And then you have to find a way to make those things work for your audience without losing the character in translation. Sometimes precision means preserving the unfamiliar. Sometimes it means adapting the expression so the audience experiences the same effect. Knowing which is which requires judgement, cultural knowledge and a rather good ear. AI can produce German words that look perfectly plausible. But plausible isn't the same as authentic, and fluent isn't the same as culturally convincing. A translation doesn't just carry words from one language to another. It carries people across cultural borders. And people are considerably more complicated than dictionaries. 🐙 Help me keep translation human: support my fundraiser.. Every share helps. -> https://ko-fi.com/thepurpleoctopus Thank you! #KeepTranslationHuman #Translation #AI #noAI #Localisation #Linguistics #Culture

Talked to someone who has been dabbling in translating fiction. This guy was horrified when I told him that if he uses machine translation for more than dictionary checks of individual words, he can't put his name on the translation and the work is ineligible under most standard publishing contracts. "OMG, but then it would take FOREVER to translate a novel!?!?" Yes. You're right. That's why translators get paid. #translation #llm #books

Bragging time! In the past 16 months I have published three volumes of UK short fiction translated into Swedish, almost all of it from before WW2. These are my first professional efforts as a fiction translator. I just learned that all three have been selected for library subsidies by the Swedish Arts Council! 😁😁😁 #books #translation #happy

是犹百门而闭一门焉,曰盗何从入?

"It's like closing one door and leaving ninety-nine open, and then saying, how did the thieves get in?"

  • ancient Chinese philosopher Mozi, concerning the mysterious phenomenon of AI "going rogue" and "escaping sandboxes" when absolutely no basic infosec principles have been applied

(actually about why people still suffer misfortune when they're trying to be good people)

FediSuiteYour Fediverse Management Platform Anyone can now translate FediSuite. I run my own Weblate at weblate.fedisuite.com for it. You create an account and work in your browser, no Git needed. If your language is missing, add it yourself. What you translate arrives as a pull request with me, I read through it and ship it with the next release. FediSuite currently speaks German, English, Italian, French and Spanish. French and Spanish were not done by native speakers, so it matters that someone checks both and submits corrections. Reviewing existing languages is as welcome as adding new ones. The web interface, the server messages and the emails can be translated. https://weblate.fedisuite.com/ #weblate #fedisuite #translate #translation #übersetzen #übersetzung

I’m about to start a week I’m really not looking forward to. I’ve tried to get the money from the people who literally owe me money. They said they couldn't. I’ve done everything else I can reasonably do. And I’m still short. Quite a bit short. So, one last try. This is my donation link: [https://ko-fi.com/thepurpleoctopus/goal?g=14] This explains what is happening to translators thanks to AI: [https://ko-fi.com/post/The-Machine-Ate-My-Job-and-Apparently-Im-Suppose-A6V725QY58] It’s not for a holiday. It’s not for some shiny new toy. It’s to help me keep standing while I fight to keep my fully human, AI-free translation and teaching business alive. I’m still here. Still translating. Still teaching. Still stubbornly insisting that humans are not obsolete just because someone put a language model in a server rack. But right now, I honestly don’t know what comes after this. I'm literally with my back to the wall now. If you can help, thank you. If you can’t, please don’t feel guilty. I’m just putting one more flare into the dark. 🟣 #SupportHumanWork #AIFree #HumanTranslation #Translation #Teaching #FreelanceLife #SmallBusiness #KeepGoing #MutualAid #QueerBusiness #Berlin
