In light of recent events, I would like to mention that I am one of the official witnesses to a bet made in 2014 between two very famous cryptographers regarding classical vs quantum algorithms to factor RSA-2048. The bet becomes void in August 2032 if the number is not factored. The loser has to buy the winner a bottle of fine scotch whiskey

Sorry to hear that Sam Neill has died. Jurassic Park, Hunt for the Wilderpeople, Peaky Blinders, The Piano etc. Plus I've drunk a few glasses of his Two Paddocks Pinot Noir wine in recent years. A true Kiwi icon and decent bloke. RIP

Replying to
@gregprice @djb my understanding of their logic is that they actually believe quantum computing is just around the corner and that ECC is already essentially worthless. This is not my opinion. More generally, I think it is poor risk management to not consider a wider range of possible futures.

"Modern AI systems are, in effect, a universal adviser to help people do harmful things" https://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2026/07/cybersecurity-and-the-gap-between-skill-and-ability.html

Cybersecurity and the Gap Between Skill and Ability - Schneier on Security

Last week, national security agencies from the Five Eyes—that’s the rich, English-language-speaking countries club—jointly released a statement warning of the increasing cyber risks of AI models: in particular, their ability to autonomously hack into systems and networks. The statement was more measured than some of the breathless headlines about it, and the advice they gave is pretty much the standard advice everyone gives—albeit with newfound urgency. Internet risks are nothing new, and cybera

Worst thing about growing old* is having to find a new barber when they retire, after you've been going there for 5+ years. Happened again today.

* not actually the worst thing about growing old

Nothing says "I'm an opportunistic grifter" better than a person being at times a member of the CCP and the NZ ACT party (libertarian right wing)

The supersingular isogeny problem in time and memory $p^{1/3+o(1)}$

We prove that under a plausible heuristic assumption (on the smoothness of certain random integers), the supersingular isogeny problem can be solved in time and memory $p^{1/3 + o(1)}$. This improves upon the previous best complexity of $p^{1/2} \cdot(\log p)^{O(1)}$. This problem is arguably the central hard problem underlying isogeny-based cryptography, and the cost of its resolution is a major (and often the only) factor in the choice of secure parameters. The impact on concrete parameter se

OpenAI Hires Fields Medalist Jacob Tsimerman, Exposing Math's AI Safety Divide

OpenAI has recruited Jacob Tsimerman just after he received the 2026 Fields Medal, creating an unusually sharp conflict between academic prestige and AI safety. The openai rsshub story began as a short news item, but its implications reach far beyond another research hire. A mathematician honored for expanding human knowledge is moving to the company building systems that he expects will reshape his profession.Tsimerman disclosed the move after receiving the medal at the International Congress o
