Did you know?: FairVote Illinois is advocating for ranked choice voting in Illinois? SB2004 is currently in the State Senate, which would allow Illinois municipalities (including Chicago) to adopt RCV if they choose to do so via referendum.

Contact your state Senator now to support critical pro-democracy innovation in Illinois with SB2004 and #RankedChoiceVoting! SB2004 is a crucial step to the progress of pro-democracy innovation with ranked choice voting!
SB2004 would explicitly allow local municipalities to implement the system and provide needed clarity for local clerks on best practices for implementation.

Last month's Illinois primary elections needed RCV...
Illinois, what would your primary ballot look like with #RankedChoiceVoting?
With ten candidates running in the Democratic Primary, the winner will likely not receive a 50% majority. In fact, the nominee could win with 30% of the vote or less.
Already used in over 50 jurisdictions nationwide, RCV would allow voters to rank their candidates. It would unite political parties and ensure majority-supported nominees in primaries.

Happy RCV Day (1/23)!
Ranked choice voting is a simple upgrade to the way we vote that gives voters more choices and more power at the ballot box. By allowing voters to rank their candidates in order of preference, RCV mitigates the so-called "spoiler effect" and allows voters to vote for their true preferences without fear of "wasting" their vote.

tinyurl.com/NoRCVBan 👈👈👈 Tell Congress to REJECT a FEDERAL RCV BAN!
As RCV is beginning to see exponential success across the country, House Republicans in the US Congress have introduced the MEGA Act, which includes a provision that would ban RCV in all federal elections. This would be a huge setback for pro-democracy innovation across the US, and it would limit voter choice and power for all Americans, regardless of party affiliation.

What is FairVote Illinois's Origin Story?
Great meeting about SB2004 with State Senator Laura Ellman of the 21st State Senate District (which covers much of Naperville, Lisle, Butterfield, Glen Ellyn, and Lombard)! Lots of positive energy around local RCV in our State Senate! We are working hard to add co-sponsors to SB2004 so that local IL municipalities can implement RCV referendums if they choose to do so!

3 cities have passed RCV in IL, but implementation is stalled by legal uncertainty. In the meantime, State Senator Laura Murphy has introduced SB2004, legislation that would provide clarity to clerks in cities seeking to try out RCV for their local elections. Visit the link in bio to contact your state senator urging them to support SB2004 so that Illinois municipalities can implement RCV!

With #RankedChoiceVoting, candidates for political office are incentivized to collaborate across campaigns.
When politicians compete for voters' second/third choice votes, they're much more civil with each other, lowering the temp of our politics.
