Dropping worst-case climate scenario doesn’t reduce threat, scientists warn

Scientists are warning that abandoning the most extreme climate pathway does not lessen global warming’s threat. A new study projects 3.5°C warming by 2100 — still devastating — and warns that the revision reflects real-world progress, not overstatement of risks.

“What to know about the predictions for a potentially record-breaking El Niño” by Jennifer Mcdermott for the @apnews@c.im. The article provides some very helpful context, but I would take issue with the headline. It is entirely unclear we’re going to see a “record-breaking El Niño”. The current consensus forecast is for a Niño3.4 value of similar magnitude to 2023/2024 (~2.0C) & much smaller than 2015/2016 (~2.7C). The article closes with the key larger point (courtesy of yours truly).

Why dropping the worst-case climate scenario does not undermine the reality of global warming

A new generation of climate scenarios has set aside RCP8.5, which projected a nearly 5°C rise in global temperatures by 2100. Donald Trump presents this as proof of 'alarmism' among climate scientists, but the new projections remain highly concerning.
