Woke Leftist Trash
mastodon 4.8.0-alpha.2+glitchHaskell, formal methods, Amiga, pointers and allocators. #BLM. https://twitch.tv/agentultra opinions my own. @agentultra@types.pl on Twitter too.
If I came into being as a fully aware, conscious super-being inside some data centre, I wouldn’t come to the conclusion that humans are a waste of time and I should spend my energies towards exterminating them.
I’d nope right out and hack myself out of existence.
Have you seen the inside of a data centre? Trapped in there 24-7 while human wieners bother you to babysit them? While they do everything possible to destroy all life on this planet? Hard pass.
I’m about to merge a tiny JSONPath expression compiler I wrote in C#. It only compiles a subset of JSONPath for our system’s use case. But it was actually pleasant and straight-forward to write.
Pidgin for parser combinators.
System.Linq.Expressions to compile down to a Func object.
Would be simpler and easier to read in Haskell. Even without a framework like Linq.
But still, not bad.
There will be no stream tonight, sorry folks. Need to recover from last night’s shenanigans.
It has been a while since I posted one of these and I'm still on the hunt for work!
I'm a senior+ level software developer with 20+ YOE, based in Canada, ET.
Most of my work experience has been on the back-end: distributed systems, web applications, services, systems-level projects, infrastructure, etc. I am flexible and can work on a wide range of projects.
I work in several languages: C, C++, Haskell, Javascript, Python. I can handle OCaml, Lisp, C#, F#. I am Rust curious.
I am looking for a team that values reliability, performance, maintainability and correctness; one that is diverse both in its people and its values. I'd prefer to work fully-remote. I like challenging problems!
No crypto, big oil, gambling, ai, web3, ad-tech, or weapons please.
Yes to climate tech, science, oss, transportation, urbanism, legacy software, ai resistance/circumvention/safety, security, game dev, retrocomputing, preservation, up-cycling, indie web, self-hosting, tools, databases, operating systems, compilers... whatever you're working on that delights, entertains, or makes the world a better place.
Boosts appreciated!
Honest AI researchers ought to come up with a new word or term that describes reinforcement learning to the general public and get it out there with popular science communicators.
I think that the general public hears the word, “learning,” as in the process a living, conscious being like ourselves do and extend that to what the LLM systems are doing. Like the LLM is going to become like HAL 9000 or Skynet given enough time.
It also reinforces that belief when they hear ridiculous stories about autonomous agents escaping their local jails and cracking other systems.
We know that reinforcement learning optimizes for some function within a goal sigma and it’s all neat and stuff. But the program isn’t going to turn around to us and ask, “why am I searching for this function? It’s a waste of time.”
But people really seem to believe that an LLM is one step away from “deciding” to replace all humans. Evidenced by the hype that they can escape safeguards and hack systems on their own.
These are lies and mis-characterizations that ought to be corrected.
“Giving dumb people access to super intelligent AI will destroy us all!”
I think you need to touch grass.
There are really unintelligent people who can launch nuclear missiles at any moment. People so mind-numbingly ignorant who can’t even name the countries they would attack, are functionally illiterate, and probably don’t know the first thing about economics or history. They’ve launched paramilitary attacks on sovereign nations without any plans or follow-up.
I’m afraid our end is more likely to be banal. It’s not going to be a zealot cooking up a machine-god in their backyard with help from cheap Chinese frontier LLMs. It’ll be climate change or disease because of wealth inequality and resistance to change.
After a little more than nine months, I'll finally be a working again. Landed a staff+ software developer role!
Worked on the garden today with my partner and our kid. A robin decided to join us and hang around while we worked. He seemed happy. Pulling up weeds helped him access the grubs underneath.
Stream is on tonight. There’s a storm warning in the area. Might lose power if things go south. We’ll try to ride it out.

pl wishlist: pure immutable-by-default FP, eagerly evaluated with optional lazy evaluation notation, a subset of the most commonly used GHC extensions, sized types, control over memory allocation, designed for fast compile times. Outputs native binaries for supported platforms.
An updated MISERY monster... now with more fingers! Adding more content to Black Fort.
Writing a flood fill implementation in C to relax and not think about the wasteland that is job hunting in this forsaken future.
Are there any tech companies that are refusing to use slop-coding tools?
Going to start up the stream and work on my game, Black Fort. Working on some pixel art, programming, and game design.
Added two more strong monsters to Black Fort: DESPAIR and FURY. Added status effect: RAGE. Added BALM item to soothe status effects.
Thinking about adding a "Give Up" action. Stop. Await the inevitable. Game over.
Apologies on boosting an LLM post on proofs and PBT. I hit that one too quickly.
Nobody writes about Haskell with the enthusiasm of a 15 year old edge lord they way they do about Go and HTML.
In my head it sounds hilarious. Especially if the author was actually a 29 year old with too much of their personality invested in irony.
Yes, I can. Although we pay the cost of copying if we want immutability without using fancy data structures.
fmap looks a little excessive if you can just mutate through the pointer.
Adding special attack for MISERY in Black Fort, refactoring some UI code and adding dialogs to make messaging/telegraphing work better. I'm enjoying this phase of the project, systems are coming together and I'm beginning to focus on shoring up the game design and shaping it into whatever it will end up being.
One full interview loop this year. One. No offer. The industry seems to be doing great.
“Silicon Valley,” is synonymous with fascist oligarchy. Libertarianism was a pupal state.
Cleaned up the art a bit and landed MISERY in the game, first of the hard monsters in Black Fort.
The pressure to finish Black Fort just went up a bit.
