As I am on dialysis, I have a nutritionalist on my “care team”. I have tried repeatedly to explain to them that I fucking KNOW what I need to do, it is the DOING that is the issue. Yes, I have tried alarms. Yes, I have tried post-it notes. Yes, if you can think of it I probably have tried it.

True, although the corollary: Some people, when confronted with a problem, think ‘I know, I’ll use regular expressions.’ Now they have two problems.

With my health, I’m not allowed any stimulants. I don’t have any directives not to consume caffeine, but I wouldn’t consume large amounts. It’s one of the reasons I gave up looking for work and just said fuck it and took disability. The US has been against my health all of my life, so fuck it, I’m done fighting.

Oh yes, you can see by the voting records and what each party does with legislation to see they are exactly the same and both treat environmental issues exactly the same. I mean, if you ignore the voting records and what each party does, that is.

The time to make that change is before the general election. Anytime you’re presented with two choices, take the less bad option. But if that’s the only time you bother to act, or even worse, if you don’t even act THEN to pick the lesser bad option, then you are one less vote against the worse, and therefore by your actions support it. But you already supported it if you weren’t fighting for better options. “Well, I didn’t pick which restaurant to visit very well, and this restaurant only has moldy fruit or sandwiches made literally from shit. I don’t like either option, so I’m just gonna eat whatever they bring me”. Sure, it’s not a great analogy in the sense that picking a different restaurant is not so easy in the context of politics, but I think it makes the point - always choose the lesser bad option. I’d rather eat the moldy fruit (we’re assuming that we must eat something in this metaphor) than the literal shit. And then work harder to try and prevent us from going to this restaurant next time. But if you are presented with the two bad options and one is worse, not picking an option is fucking stupid.

This entire experience has soured me a bit on Lemmy. There were a flurry of excited posts about the massive drop that totally happened. Every article I read refrained from presenting any evidence, and all used waffling text that sounded like it was all coming from other sources that didn’t have any proof. It didn’t help that Zalenskyy seemed to explicitly say that there was a massive drop - and that sucks, because I tend to generally believe what Ukraine says. I know they’re in wartime and every government lies to some degree, but they generally seemed to be truthful for the most part. So when I tried pointing this out in places, I got massive pushback - “No no, there’s totally been a massive drop!” Where? Where’s the drop? Where’s the numbers from someone doing actual measurements? No answers, just downvotes. I see this time and time again - often where it’s probably less important, like people misread things and decide it means one thing when it doesn’t mean that thing - and usually, the thing is bad, so the fact that they completely misread it is probably not so bad, except that it means nobody is caring about the truth. For example, the Vance couch thing bothers me. There’s plenty to string fascists up from trees for, but that couch thing was a joke in a book. So of all the legitimate things we can hate him for and joke about, that is a lie - a lie when it was taken as truth; originally a joke that became a lie when it was taken as truth. We really don’t need to come up with bullshit to be angry. All it does is makes us susceptible to more lies. How much of what I believe is a lie? How much is just flatly incorrect because people keep repeating it as true and I’ve also fallen for it? I’m not immune. It’s a serious problem everywhere, but Lemmy is small enough and generally progressive enough that it stands out because I EXPECT that fascists to lie. I would expect better from us. (And we aren’t as bad, but the amount of misinformation that is vibe-upvoted is insane)

Not at all the same thing, but you’ve reminded me of one annoyance. heh. I have dialysis three times per week that involves being in a chair, laid back for 4.5 hours. For some, they watch the provided television, but I can’t stand it. I have over-the-ear headphones and I play a particular playlist every time and try to nap, and even if I can’t get to sleep, I have my eyemask on, so it’s a dark place with nice music to hang out. Multiple times now I’ve been in a dream after having successfully gotten to sleep, and someone will talk to me in my dream, but I can’t hear them because I have music playing in my headphones. (When I dream at night, no headphones, I never hear any audio in my dreams, so the lack of them talking is not unusual, except the musci playing I can hear). So in the dream, I realize I have headphones on, and I tell them - sorry, jsut a sec, lemme take these headphones off so I can hear you. And I take the headphones off, and te music is still going. So I take my headphones off again… but the music is still playing. And I will take my headphones off a half dozen times, getting more and more frustrated that I can’t make te music stop so I can hear them. It’s quite annoying, but somewhat hilarious (in an eye-rolling way) when I do wake up and remember it happening. lol

Reinstalled Tropico 6 after a while. It took me so long to figure out how to not lose money (a few years ago). Now I play for a good while, but eventually get bored and give it a break. But it is fun. I’m irritated at the DLC. They seem a little pricey for what you get, which is a couple of buildings and a couple of other things, introducing new systems which is fine but… like… it’s too much specific stuff and not enough general stuff. So I ahve a couple of the DLC and that’s all, and that’s fine.

If so, it was coincidence. Forgive the copy/paste as I wrote about this elsewhere: They did not attack the “shitposting datacenters”. The Russian troll/misinformation farms use western VPNs and pirated residential accounts to blend in. If they used Yandex Cloud, it would be easy for websites to filter them and deny them access. What stopped is the “bots” that index pages, like how Google indexes pages. The Yandex bots that index pages have gone offline because those are the bots that were running in the Yandex cloud / datacenters.

No. First of all, the word “colored” has multiple meanings. “I colored in the draweing” is not offensive. “I gave the paper to the colored” is offensive because this is a different meaning. “Colored” used to be the preferred term for black people in the US - hence “NAACP” still contains “colored”. But walk up to a black person and call them “colored” and see how that goes for you. Just because a word is not offensive in one meaning or context doesn’t mean it’s not offensive in another. Second of all, some of your examples are not only a different meaning, but a different word. “Retard” as a noun is one thing, and is pronounced “REE-tard”. When an aircraft is landing, it is the verb, which is “re-TARD”. In general, in English, when a word serves as a noun or a verb, the strssed syllable changes. That can help you understand that it’s a different word, or meaning of a word. When you use “retard” to mean “someone stupid”, the meaning you are using IS THE SAME MEANING as “mental retardation”. That is where that comes from. So like it or not, you are using that epithet. In the same way that if you were to say you “jewed” someone out of some money, or “gyped” someone, those also are epithets, with thet former being antisemitic and the latter being… I don’t remember which word applies to being bigoted against Romani, commonly called gypsies. I’m afraid the ignorant mind - meaning that you didn’t know - is you. I hope this education helps. Your mind is clearly not stupid, don’t misread what I said. “Ignorance” is not a bad thing, it is a simple truth until you learn something. I’m ignorant of nuclear physics. But I’m not ignorant of where the word “retard” (in the epithet sense) comes from. And hopefully now you aren’t. So you have a choice: Continue to use a harmful word when there are so many other choices available that are not harmful, or shut your mind and continue to use a harmful word.

OTOH, one of the few coping techniques I’ve found to be helpful is when I absolutely MUST not lose something, especially to take with me somewhere on the next day, to loudly proclaim “I’m going to lose this thing, so I’m putting it here so I know where the fuck I lost it” - and making a big deal about it usually helps solve that problem. …if I do remember that I need it the next day, of course.

I use the compose key on Linux and free software called wincompose on Windows — this allows me easy access to real characters easily, so I can say 25¢ instead of $0.25, or talk about how it’s only getting up to around 65°F today, or since I’m in the US and have the dollar sign easily but I have a couple of online services in the EU, I can easily say I pay €10,95/mo for one of them. I prefer using the actual characters - so when I say ¿Por qué no los dos? it’s correct. One of the things that has absolutely pissed me off is em dashes becoming more common and attributed to AI. I use the fucking things because they are useful and I’ve used them for 15+ years. It used to be a Good Thing™, but now occasionally gets me accused of being AI. Especially since, as you can see by this very reply, I afraid neither of writing nor reading, and because of my ADHD, I tend to run a bit on the verbose side of things. I guess, thinking about it, I’m in the same boat as artists who now face similar accusations. I suppose I’m lucky, though, as the accusations against me are rare, comparitively. Real people absolutely do use em dashes and always have. Certainly it’s less common, but absolutely a thing.

Ah, thank you for that. I’m surprised I don’t see you posting in WAY more threads about people we should also avoid, then, as it seems like a relatively common offense. I’m not dismissing your concerns out of hand, mind. I’ve had to decide many times who I wish to throw out (JK Rowling) and who I really really don’t want to throw out but have at least minimized my support (Neil Gaiman). It’s a hard call, and standing up for what you feel strongly about - especially when it’s at least a pretty good cause - is something I can respect, even if my instinct on THIS one is to go “really? eh, who cares”. For me personally, it can take me some times to let ideas percolate in my head. My initial reaction is not to immediately unsub from Tasting History. But I’ll ponder on it, thanks to you. I guess I’m saying all this becasue I expected the reply to be something stupid I could just ignore and then berate you for spamming the thread. But I certainly can’t say that, whether or not I end up agreeing with you. So thank you for the answer. I do appreciate it. And I will honestly consider it.

Exactly this. I keep reading all of the stuff posted about this and I have yet to see evidence. And in fact, while i’m not a security expert, I am a hosting expert, and I can tell you: That is not how they operate. They obfuscate their origin as much as possible, else it would be trivial to filter them and block them. I respect Ukraine and Zelenskyy, but I think this claim is untrue.

And notably, most of the actual news articles, even from the start, admitted that there wasn’t any proof if you actually read the articles. They were all “People are saying there’s a drop!” but farther down it was all “There’s no evidence it’s happening, but people are saying!!!”

I can’t remember the last time there was a vulnerability like this. There have been, but it’s been quite a while. Feel free to use what you want, like what you want, but man, it just feels like when a woman gains political power and people come out of the WOODWORK to suddenly have problems with women in power. And I mean, people are absolutely bigoted against PHP. Is it worthy of criticism? It surely iw worthy of a lot, sure. Is it worthy of THIS level of disdain? I think not, but again, I’m all for people using what they like and feel is superior. As for me, I’ve hosted professionally since 1997. While I’ve never been a big host, I did at one point have well over a hundred client sites, almost all WordPress. It’s been about a decade since I’ve seen any of them hacked, mostly because I keep all the sites I host up to date - WP, themes, plugins. And a bit of luck in there. So go on, be hateful as you wish, and I’ll keep quietly using a tool that works.
