It's incomprehensible to me that in this scenario, I'm thinking of what's best for EVERYONE and just want to keep everyone safe, yet given societal norms, I come across as overbearing and covid-obsessed, rather than the other parent coming across as irresponsible for exposing everyone to a sick kid. 🤷🏻♀️
Even if it's not covid, we still don't want to catch ANY illness!!

I said, "Vaccination doesn't prevent infection. You know, vaccines are even only effective for like 4 months..."
They clearly were NOT interested in being informed, only on pushing back on the testing. With multiple obviously high-risk family members in attendance, I pushed back harder and they finally agreed to test. The kid is negative (for now).

I'm boosting my own post from a few years ago because recent events have got me wondering: Where has common sense gone? Why does the sense of community care shown in this image no longer exist? Why do people now care less about their own health than is depicted in this 1960s sitcom?
(Sadly, I'm pretty sure the answer is, capitalism has prioritized showing up for work/school as more important than caring for your own health, and the marketing of "just push through" medications has normalized going to work/school while sick, framing those who stay home when sick as weak or dramatic or even selfish.)

Wow! Caught a random episode of The Dick Van Dyke Show on TV. In flashbacks, Rob & Laura tell their son Ritchie stories about their wedding. After wacky antics, Rob ended up with an "upper respiratory infection" and everyone wore cloth #masks to avoid getting Rob's illness! 😷
So a mainstream TV show from the 1960s had a normalizing, albeit comedic, portrayal of masking up in the presence of a contagious illness. When and why did we ever stop doing that?!

@huskify@mastodon.world Yes! EVEN if it's "just a cold", no one wants it!!!! Especially not the over-80 grandpa with anemia & a heart condition!! Why am I the only one who cares about Grandpa's health?!? Even Grandpa himself doesn't seem to care if he gets sick or not. 😭
I can't know for sure but I suspect the parent was thinking, "If I test and it's positive, I'd have to take her home & that would disrupt the fun-filled family weekend." Though I don't understand why a sick child in attendance in itself is not considered a disruption, plus the potential disruption if other family members get sick!! 😖

Agghghhh!!! 😖
📅 I have a medical appointment next Monday.
✅ Last Monday I got a reminder text & confirmed the appointment via text.
✅ Also got both text & email with a link to pre-register online. (I am annoyed at how this task makes the appointment encroach upon non-appointment time, but I understand it helps the practice.) Completed the online check-in process.
😠 Now today, I get a phone call from the practice. After a few muddled exchanges - "How may I help you?" "Uh, YOU called ME." - it becomes clear it's an AI calling!!!! They make me re-confirm the appointment again, tell me nothing new, and in the end do nothing but raise my blood pressure.

@atow@mastodon.social Wow this looks amazing!! Thank you!!!
This would have been an excellent tool when we were caring for my mom with Parkinson's.
And just today I had 2 interactions with people who didn't seem to think it was any big deal that I'm on the cusp of having to take over managing my dad's medical care. It's a Big Deal that takes time, mental bandwidth, physical energy, and an emotional toll. So I'm in a place to be wildly appreciative of anything and anybody that recognizes how much work it is to be a caregiver.
I'm sorry about your father's diagnosis. Sounds like your family has rallied around him, and I hope he is doing well. Your experience that went into this app will surely help many other families!!

It was especially great because in the end, the guy talked about how some of his students - on their own after this activity - started masking up in class. So even though the video was primarily about not blindly trusting AI, it dovetailed nicely to also be about being covid cautious.
If this video sounds familiar to you, please send me the link! Thank you!!

@VeeRat Congrats on the good news at your appt!!!! 👏🎉
The rest I'm sorry you had to endure; I go through the same at my cancer center. 😭 To get through my appts, I have to consciously separate my providers' cancer competency from their lack of covid competency. 🙄 So far no one has given me a hard time about masking but also the best I've encountered is maybe 1 or 2 other maskers, including patients AND staff. 🤦🏻♀️ How even cancer centers gave up on respiratory illnesses precautions is beyond me. 😠

@ericmacknight@mstdn.ca Thank you for helping to normalize masking in your school!! Even if it helps just one student or fellow teacher mask up when sick, it's served a valuable purpose on top of protecting your health and the health of others. I know it takes courage. (My husband is also a lone masking teacher in his school.) Thank you!!

@huskify@mastodon.world Right?! Totally agree. Though I'd even MUCH prefer a RECORDED automated reminder over an interactive AI bot that muddles the "conversation"!!

@huskify@mastodon.world @atow@mastodon.social Aww, thank you so much for this support. It is simultaneously uplifting and depressing when people who don't know my dad or me IRL show more understanding than close family. But I guess that is nothing new, it's why there are such things as online communities and support groups. I appreciate you!

@juliaclement@mastodon.nz Your wife's lucky to have had your sorbet deliveries while recovering! 😄
My husband also had covid twice & the 2nd time he didn't rapid test positive until the FOURTH day of symptoms!! Then he tested positive for the next SIX days. (Luckily he isolated at the first sign of illness so I didn't get it.) Absolutely proper testing while symptomatic should mean testing every day at least through day 5, in my opinion.
But in this case, I had such a hard time securing the one test, and the parent is sooo not interested in actually keeping others safe, that I don't think I have it in me to fight for any additional testing. 😭

@eiranix @lockelyfox Wow, this is such an amazingly kind, generous, thoughtful thing to do!!! ❤️ ❤❤ Thank you for being you & using your talents to bring joy to others!!
(I once asked a graphic design friend for advice on how to get an image created. He just went ahead & made it for me & I was moved by his kindness! Until he made it clear he thought I had asked him for free work & said he made a huge exception for me because I can't afford his services. 😕 So I get how valuable your efforts are.)

Specifically, he had the students ask the AI for advice to prevent covid. The AI listed things like vaccines & handwashing, but not masking.
Then he had the students ask the AI specifically about how effective masks are to prevent covid & how effective handwashing is. Clearly masking is WAY more effective, so the students saw how the 1st answer was misleading.
They were finally guided to ask the AI WHY it didn't list masking as a top way to prevent covid, and the AI skirted the question.

@wynlim@kopiti.am I'm sorry you got sick but I'm amazed at the testing experience you had and appreciate you sharing it!!! I can not even IMAGINE that level of service in the U.S., and I'm pretty envious of a society that cares about health so much that people would even use such a service.

@Nshrubs@mstdn.social @MatWright@mastodon.social Wow, I am actually very impressed with these protocols!!!
In my kid's school, the nurse will NOT test for covid. They suggest you "consider" testing for covid yourself if covid is suspected (no tests provided, must buy your own) and kids and teachers are advised to go to school if "no fever and symptoms are improving", regardless of test results!! If they test positive, masking for 5 days is "strongly encouraged" but not mandatory and no one enforces it anyway. 😠

@bok@toot.cat I am always so pleased to see pro-masking signs in medical spaces - it means SOMEONE is still paying attention - but WHY is it ALWAYS flouted by the staff?!?! 😭😠 The active defiance of their own guidelines is soooo upsetting.
I hope your actual appointment went smoothly and that you are in good health!
