I grew up in a cult. And this is the first article on this stuff that has clearly captured the cultishness — if saying no to something loses your friends, house, job, and community… you are definitely in a cult. And this is like five of them. Sex, AI, and the Apocalypse - Ian Duncan https://iankduncan.com/personal/2026-09-16-sex-ai-and-the-apocalypse/

This is a long and incredibly fucking depressing list of tech people who have either gone full fascist or are just perfectly comfortable hanging out with and supporting those who have. RE: https://xoxo.zone/@davidcelis/117270577434344129 I was a founder, fired by my board, for far less egregious sins than Matt (I dared to let growth sink to 70% annually - and I was dumb enough to hire a COO with no loyalty). Yeah this is heinously weak.

RE: https://sfba.social/@historyofpunkrock/117018129540167223 They’ve always been here, and what we have could not exist without them

It’s very cool to be at the VoxConf 2026. I just came by briefly to say hi.

I did a quick summary of what my goals were when I started Puppet, back in2005:

• Sysadmins should use software written by sysadmins
• Sysadmins should have a seat at the table, not just have code thrown over the wall
• The job of system administration should change from manual, one-off work to strategic, high level, automated work

It’s great to see the community working to build a strong, viable community around a truly open project and toolchain

@mitchellh@hachyderm.io there are so many different crazy things people believe now, almost implicitly. The big one I keep thinking about is that people just seem to think code longevity has zero value any more. Like, we always knew code that doesn’t change for a long time is maybe a bad sign, that it is rotting. But it is also a good sign that it is likely more stable, secure, and valuable than new code. But so many people now just seem to think it is always a good thing to be able to change any code any time. They don’t talk about the gradual hardening that is no longer happening, or the ability for other parts of the system to evolve more because this part is so stable. I assume that over time our industry will learn how to talk coherently and intelligently about all this. But we’re obviously a long ways from there, and there’s a lot of destruction going to happen between then and now.

Welp, I finally saw the Odyssey tonight. Nolan is a whole thing, isn’t he? Wants audio to be uncomfortable, believes color is offensive except in very small and relatively dark doses. Has never seen a smile before. Is so afraid someone might break the fourth wall that actors are not allowed to ever look at the camera. I have regularly thought of the movies of his I have watched. But I am not sure I have ever *enjoyed* them, or thought them good movies? Memento was probably the one that haunts me most, and was “best”. Oppenheimer was maybe “better”, but I never ever think about it. As to the Odyssey…? I dunno. Four stars? People who like this kind of movie will like it. It was a lot, and sometimes that’s enough. A faithful reproduction of the story it was not. A fundamentally interesting and/or good movie it was not. But it was a spectacle. I can’t say I enjoyed any part of it, and there were many parts I was overwhelmed and had to look away ( #actuallyautistic). And I literally plugged my ears through the climax because fuck you Nolan you don’t get to make me suffer what are you an ambulance? No. I’d call it a huge swing and a base hit. And i am *definitely* giving it higher marks just because it has made so many more people interested in the original classics. (One of my kids is absolutely *incensed* that the movie conflated Helios and Apollo. “Apollo does *not have cattle*!” I’m raising them right!)

@CamellisSinensis@mastodon.social @codinghorror@infosec.exchange and fundamentally, surgeons are people who fix things with knives. You ask a guy who fixes things with knives the best way to fix something… he’s going to recommend a knife

Last week at Local First Conf, it seems like everyone was talking about ATProto. I really want to build on it, but I'm not sure I'll be able to. I wrote up what and how and why not: https://lukekanies.com/writing/building-on-atproto/ (ActivityPub was never an option, because it's even less local-first, and the HOA mentality makes it impossible to build applications on.) #atproto

@getalifemike@urbanists.social wtff a) this could upend our entire economy, not just our science. Like, the second story of the Iran war, after oil supply, was fertilizer supply b) like 90% of plant science is “seriously how do we get the nitrogen” c) now 90% of plant biology is going to be “how do I get this plant to accept this organelle” d) all of plant science ethics will be “is it morally correct to jam this organelle into all plants”

My twins’ doctor’s office just changed software systems, and the changeover managed to merge a bunch of their records. Siblings born on the same day is still too challenging for the modern software industry, in the year of our lord 2026. Yay.

@joeress @inthehands yeah the second Dawkins started calling his bot a girl’s name I knew we were in for a shit-show, especially since it happened so quickly

This is a hell of a review. A Better World Is Not Possible | Los Angeles Review of Books https://lareviewofbooks.org/article/dangerous-dirty-violent-young-ayers-dohrn-weather-underground

@jimkreft@social.coop @waldoj@mastodon.social @mathowie@xoxo.zone so far enterprise is the only agency that has not infuriated me enough to walk away 🤷‍♂️ Hardly a ringing endorsement, but it’s not like any of them are actually good

@adapalmer@wandering.shop my understanding is that it also has fewer problems with causing people’s eyes to burn (based on conversations on @atpfm@mastodon.social, not my own experience)

@kboyd@phpc.social it’s in the article :)

@ripienaar@devco.social @enobacon@urbanists.social I have only used it for iPhone apps. I was quite pleasantly surprised at it. There are a few places where the strict typing makes your head explode — especially when moving in and out of json — but overall it feels modern, powerful, and flexible. I’d be happy writing general purpose stuff in it. And the static typing is generally a big win.

@ripienaar@devco.social nah :) I chose it because I wanted to see what it was like working on iOS native stuff I was building something that was a good fit for just being an iPhone app, and a simple one at that, so it was a good fit. Still haven’t solved sync — using CloudKit but kind of hate it — but everything else is decent. I hope to get it published this year.

@enobacon@urbanists.social @ripienaar@devco.social I’ve been using swift, which is pretty comfortable to write. Surprisingly close to ruby, which I adore (as a language)

@ripienaar@devco.social I’ve tried that. The plans are fine. It’s the architecture, the interworking that I have not been happy with. I have also struggled with plenty of details around web dev just not producing an app that feels good, but I am not as deep into that so not sure how much that’s my lack of experience vs actual limitations.

This article is *a lot*. (It is also very very long.) Do not read unless you want to learn far more about interracial porn and right wing insanity, and how it all overlaps. The Interracial Cuck Porn Theory of Everything https://www.liberalcurrents.com/the-interracial-cuck-porn-theory-of-everything/

@skinnylatte @timrichards I used to. But I agree with the article— I often find managing overhead space more stressful than checking now. Not always. But… often

@jalefkowit and they were asshole centrists every one, dammit

@andrewnez@mastodon.social and just about every other type of security flaw, too. And every other kind of packaging failure. I’m haunted by a thread I saw with its founder, pointing out the 6k malware packages and his response was just like, what do you expect I can do about it? Like, he knew his choices were tighten it way down, or accept being a malware distributor, and he chose malware.

@philip@mastodon.mallegolhansen.com it’s true that the train is more expensive. But it is also a lot slower. (Agreed we can and should do much better.)

@quinn@social.circl.lu yeah but then it’s too loud

@quinn@social.circl.lu I’d go to theaters more often if they were quieter and no one else was there

@philip@mastodon.mallegolhansen.com yeah. I have a map focused on the oceans, with topo profiles of all the ocean floors

@andrewnez I mean the *vulnerabilities* aren’t new, just the reports… Imagine being able to report on new reports of old exploits, vs new exploits being added all the time. Because Lordy knows, new exploits are being added all the time

@andrewnez@mastodon.social why do you do this to yourself Andrew

@mitchellh@hachyderm.io congrats!

@ludicity@mastodon.sprawl.club I loved his lean startup book. This is a new one, i have not read it yet but it seems to be a kind of anti-enshittification manifesto/guide

@ripienaar@devco.social I know I am supposed to like Threes more than this game, but I do not. I was pretty obsessed with it early on, but haven’t really played it in years

@ripienaar@devco.social this looks like the original: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/threes/id779157948 2048 is almost a clone of it but not quite

@Catvalente@wandering.shop sorry - pool! Lots of people think they are better at it after a couple of drinks. And there’s maybe a little science to back it up. (It was topical when I asked. And you did say ask weird questions. 🤷‍♂️)

@federicomena@mstdn.mx @jalefkowit@vmst.io wait, we’re supposed to be doing maintenance? We had a Tesla for five years and only did tire stuff. Never had to do brakes. I think we swapped the wipers. We’ve had a Hyundai Ioniq 5 for a year, and… I think they’re punking us. We’ve brought it in for its two recommended maintenance things, but… I can’t imagine they did much. Like, it feels like the dealer just gets separation anxiety (and “I have not charged service fees” anxiety). We charge at home, now we inflate tires at home. Once in a while we buy a bottle of window washer fluid. It’s fucking great.

@philip@mastodon.mallegolhansen.com very cool. I love the focus on the oceans

@HauntedOwlbear@eldritch.cafe I think about this constantly while watching tv. My father in law would like to use his AirPods when watching, but then none of us could hear. Or, my wife and I could use ours while the kids are sleeping. Nope. It’s either single-user, or out loud.

@Catvalente@wandering.shop do you find/believe you are better after some number of drinks? If so, what is the optimal number? And do you stop drinking then, or just have fun?

@quinn@social.circl.lu I have to fake it with headphones

@ludicity@mastodon.sprawl.club have you read Incorruptible by Eric Ries? No idea if he is aware of you, but there seems some overlap in what you focus on. (I think he’s on Bluesky)

@datum@zeroes.ca @PatrickWirth@mstdn.ca haven’t we proven that neuron death is not in fact irreversible? I know the scientific establishment used to believe that, but it seems to be pretty widely accepted now that adults can grow new brian cells.
