Taking a break from here.
Rotating a photo in 90-degree increments has GOT to be one of the most common actions people take with their iPhone photos…
And yet:
-
Photos on the phone: Multiple taps, buried in an edit mode, and the whole photo has to slowly “load” first
-
Photos on the Mac: Command-R on the grid is VERY slow to execute, gives no feedback, and often drops repeated Cmd-Rs instead of queuing them
Does everyone at Apple just get photo orientation right on the first try, every time? Why is this so bad?

The $3500 face-covering, world-isolating, anti-social, uncomfortably heavy 3D computer headset with clunky external battery, limited optical quality, awful text input, awful voice input, primitive pointer input, a locked-down OS, almost no software, almost no content, and no good way to share it with anyone else in the household was held back by… poor retail training!
Yeah, that's it.

I love when someone puts a HUGE amount of engineering and design into their app — far more than the market demands, rewards, or even notices — purely because they care a LOT about it.
I strive to do that for podcasts.
@_Davidsmith@mastodon.social does it for WALKING. Which you might do.
And hiking, which is just walking.
The new Pedometer++ hides a world-class hiking app behind what you thought was a simple step counter.
Check it out. It's truly a hidden gem in the App Store.
I know it’s not new
but that “WW” is a crime

This turned out to be the luckiest possible week to contain a Wednesday-evening event at my kid's school

Why stop at 2 ads in App Store search results?
Why not just eliminate the organic search results entirely and show ONLY ads for all search and browse pages, thereby forcing developers to pay for EVERY new customer?
THAT's the Apple way!
(If you think this is a ridiculous exaggeration… is it? How many ads will be above the organic results in 5 more years, and what percentage of customers will ever scroll past them?)

Some design languages make it really difficult, or outright impossible, to implement "good" versions of common UI patterns and needs.
My biggest request for the 27 OSes: Tweak the Liquid Glass system design to let us create better UIs with it, rather than needing to opt out of it.
This means:
- No text is blurry, ever. Blurry text == bad design.
- Navigation bars and toolbars don't need to blur the content behind them.
- Sidebars don't need fake content mirrored and blurred underneath them.

I really like SwiftUI.
It just still has a lot of missing or incomplete functionality, and Apple doesn’t seem to be in much of a rush to fill in the gaps.
I sometimes wonder how much better macOS could be today if they’d never tried to make the iPad into a Mac replacement, and had focused on maintaining and improving just one great PC-class OS.

AirPods Pro 2/3.
Transparency mode.
"Reduce Loud Sounds" enabled in AirPods accessibility settings.
The entire show. (I take them out during the break between Phish/Goose sets, though. For other concerts… I don't know, there are other concerts?)

I had a great time on MPU! I think we got into a lot of good conversations. Check it out:
Read this great post by @pxlnv@mastodon.social:

Then re-read the last two paragraphs, replacing "Adobe" with "Apple".

Additionally:
Almost always order the dish on the menu named after the restaurant.
And always order whatever is outlined on the menu with a decorative box.
Mac Mini is significantly backordered:
- M4, 16 GB: April 17–24
- M4 Pro, 48 GB: May 21–29
- M4 Pro, 64 GB: "16–18 weeks" 😮
I've never seen an Apple shipping estimate that far out.

OMG it’s my entire childhood!
Donatos was the most common pizza served at school and events growing up, but if you really want the best version of this style I had, it’s at Rubino’s in Bexley, which I’m delighted to see is still there: https://maps.app.goo.gl/miY45Jb6BMHhN52H9?g_st=ic
A LAN party of Total Annihilation with my friends and a stack of Rubino’s pepperoni pizzas was a fantastic time.

The party's over!
(I can't believe it lasted this long.)

This is a total showstopper for any iOS apps using CloudKit.
RE: https://oldbytes.space/@CodingItWrong/116330777729685175
Absolutely not. iPhones and iPads and Macs and Apple Watches and AirPods and HomePods and Vision Pro and tons of other products are all computers.
Considering adopting iOS 26's SwiftUI WebView.
Anyone have any good/bad experiences with it?
I currently wrap a UIWebView for displaying the HTML show notes in Overcast, and I use custom URL schemes to feed it data. I did find this to help with that in the new API if I go that way: https://useyourloaf.com/blog/swiftui-custom-url-schemes/
