Yellowstone National Park Opens Fishing Season Early on Three Rivers | MidCurrent

In a significant policy shift for the 2026 fishing season, Yellowstone National Park has announced that the Firehole, Gibbon, and Madison rivers will open to anglers on May 1—weeks ahead of the traditional Memorial Day weekend opener. The decision, announced January 27 by park officials, represents a strategic adaptation to changing climate conditions that have increasingly disrupted summer fishing on these thermally influenced waterways.

However, continued low numbers of striped bass entering the population is a threat to this progress as there are fewer juveniles growing into spawning adults."

Across fly lines, terminal tackle, weighting systems, and even floatants, this year's gear landscape reflects a deliberate shift toward what might be called "conditions-first" engineering: formulations, materials, and designs built not just for the river in general but for the specific, unforgiving demands of cold water, tiny flies, and the subtle presentations they require.

March is here, and with it comes that restless stretch where winter's grip is loosening but spring hatches haven't quite kicked off. The water's still cold, the fish are still deep—mostly—and the best thing a tyer can do right now is fill the box from top to bottom. This week's Tying Tuesday does exactly that, with four patterns that span the entire water column.

Tying Tuesday: From Realistic to Reckless | MidCurrent

There's a spectrum to fly tying that doesn't get talked about enough. On one end, you've got the purists—tyers who want every fiber placed just so, every segment colored to mimic the real thing down to the lateral line. On the other, there are the tyers who mix two dubbings together on a whim, slap a name on the result, and dare the fish to ignore it. This week's Tying Tuesday lives in that full range, and we think you'll find something worth spinning up no matter where your instincts fall.
