St. Louis Urbanists held our second ever bench top painting event. Turnout was huge, and we painted 40 bench tops. Next month we will assemble them and deploy them to city bus stops, joining the ~60 existing benches we've put up.
Providing safe, comfortable seating for our community should be the city's job. We're proud to fill in the gaps until our electeds do better.
I've recently discovered an amazing, self-help resource for mental health issues maintained by the Center for Clinical Intervention in Australia: https://www.cci.health.wa.gov.au/Resources/Looking-After-Yourself
The website contains workbooks for managing various mental health issues on your own.
For me, this is a huge deal. I started with a new therapist I was excited about in the fall, only to have that end abruptly due to personal issues on the therapist's side. I get it, life happens. But it left me feeling intimidating by the idea of starting over, and without any obvious direction forward. The material on this website has given me something truly helpful to work with until I find a new person I'm happy with.
It covers a broad range of topics, including Anxiety, Depression, Body Dysmorphia, Bipolar, and many more. I can't vouch for all of them obviously but the one I have been working through has been super enlightening.
Timberborn hit 1.0 recently. It's definitely my favorite colony builder in a while. The vertical building is refreshing, as are the drought and badwater mechanics. The aesthetic is playful and hopeful too. Almost solarpunk adjacent. Definitely worth checking out.
I'm really enjoying Esoteric Ebb even tho I fell off Disc Elysium. The setting helps a lot. For those unaware, Esoteric Ebb is very much the same mechanics as Disco but with D&D trappings. You assign the basic 6 stats, and they offer you council as voices in your head.
Disco was too bleak for me, it just was an unpleasant time. And the particular brand of political options available didn't really speak to me. Esoteric Ebb stars the player as a cleric, seemingly just brought back from the dead, trying to solve the explosion of a tea shop days before a city's first ever election. There's still all the politics and morality and intrigue and tension, but in a world that seems to contain more hope. It's overall more vibrant, and the silliness feels less nihilistic too.
This creator, Ikoxun, is doing a really charming series of videos showing off little widget/art/interesting websites that you otherwise won't come across in the hyper-advertiser-optimized internet landscape we all live in now. I remember some of these from the "good old days" of the internet. Very enjoyable anti-doomscrolling content.
(even more) cool websites to surf the web and stop doomscrolling (:
One thing that I feel like is at risk of being lost in discussion of the murder of Renee Nicole Brown is that citizens of a democracy, a real functional democracy, have a right to be angry and loud and belligerent at authority figures on the street. Free peoples in a free society do not have to behave a certain way to maintain their rights.
Watching pirated episodes of Black Mirror hits different when a good portion of the S6 and S7 dread involves streaming and subscription services. Jokes on you, I didn't agree to the terms of service.
I know there's many, many serious and complex reasons to hate American prisons but the idea of charging imprisoned people for and then taking away a free open source strategy game for no discernible reason is uniquely vexing. How dare the prisoners have fun. https://prisonjournalismproject.org/2024/03/31/popular-video-game-banned-federal-prisons/

Recently I've perfected my quickish (15min) vegan breakfast bowl:
* Rice (we almost always have some leftover)
* Crumbled tofu
* Seaweed shreds
* Avocado
* Chili paste
* Soy sauce
That's it, no cooking (unless you want to warm it up). Very filling, very flavorful.
Animal Crossing New Horizons and Pokopia are proof that the world is ready for a new Viva Pinata. Give it to us Rare.
The #30DayFossChallenge is coming up again soon. Stay tuned here: http://foss.nullarch.com/
I'm hoping to be posting more about it this year than last.

The protest last night had a great turnout and got amazing press. Quite illustrative that someone was hit by a car at the protest, fortunately that person was physically fine.

If any mutuals are interested, I have a 1.15 openTTD server open and happy to share with anyone. It's mostly default, some difficulty tweaks. DM if you want in, for mutuals.

Something I struggle with is finding a good source of on-the-ground news that isn't reddit/social media. Like for the murder of Alex Pretti, NYT and AP were very slow to give the real story, well after video was readily available.
At the same time, using reddit to get that up-to-date info also gave my brain an excuse to just mindlessly browse reddit.
Curious how other people balance this.
My personal conspiracy theory is that nobody actually uses the feature in google maps to report things like speed traps and lane closures, they're just collecting enough data to predict those things and the buttons are there for plausible deniability.
Interested in maps as a tool for advocacy and storytelling in the St. Louis region? Join tge next STL Mappers meetings! No technical experience required—just a passion for St. Louis and a belief in better urban futures. Next meeting: April 23, 6:00-7:00 at T-Rex (911 Washington Ave, 5th floor)
This is a cold-hot take but my partner and I have been trying to play through Baldur's Gate 3 as a coop campaign and we both just kind of wish it was Divinity Original Sin 2. Personally not a big fan of the DnD mechanics, and both of us feel that DOS2 integrated 2 players substantially better. Wonder if anyone feels the same/differently.
Anyone have experience with MIK Adapters on ebikes? Specifically fussing around with trying to secure a milk crate to my Globe Haul ST better than my jerry-rigged bungee solution.
Is it possible on GrapheneOS to make it impossible for a user to install/enable Vanadium (or any other core app)? I'm trying to create a profile that has no direct internet access. #grapheneos
Got my glasses prescription updated and debating options. I work in a place with fluorescent light most of the day. I'm fairly photosensitive and have frequent headaches and occasional migraines.
I've had two pairs of transitions, convenient but neither as good as sunglasses of course.
So options I'm looking at are new transitions (maybe Xtractive?). FL-41s, or the classic 1 regular and 1 sunglasses pair. Thoughts/experiences appreciated.
