Four solid months into my Linux journey, and I had a realization:

I will never need Microsoft Windows again, for anything. I really cannot express how liberating this feels.

It feels like escaping the matrix.

I have a close friend whose 17 year old is headed to college this fall. He got accepted into a computer engineering program.

He's very bright and enthusiastic, but his exposure to computing is alien to me: Roblox and tablets. Never built a PC. Never heard of Linux.

So I have to wonder, what will his generation of computer engineers be like? Will they go on to design and build things we can't dream of? Or is the lack of "computing" in their formative years a setback?

I guess we'll see.

Today I donated a few bucks to an open source project that I have fallen in love with.

I was a bit disheartened after searching around a bit to see many people discussing how they've never donated to an #opensource project, even if they use it daily.

So here's a gentle reminder: We think nothing of spending $20 a month to subscribe to a megacorp, so how about instead you take a minute to donate five bucks to an #OSS project you use and enjoy. If everyone did that, the impact would be huge.

Unreal Engine is getting rid of Blueprints in UE6.

One dev created a petition to try to convince them to keep it:

I wrote about the feeling of withdrawal that comes from waking up from a dream in which my son is still alive.

When I have dreams in which my son is still alive, they are so real that I never want to wake up. This is about that feeling.

My review of the 80+ hour Fantasian Neo Dimension on @infinitebacklog@mstdn.games

"Spectacular and very worth investing the time to explore it. Despite its relatively minor drawbacks, it feels like a magnum opus of JRPG history; a love letter to the entire genre.

If you have ever enjoyed a Japanese role playing game, or any Final Fantasy game at all, you simply must play Fantasian."

The Final Fantasy game you probably never knew you wanted | Fantasian Neo Dimension

This game feels like a love letter. A love letter to JRPGs, to the careers of two huge influences on this entire genre, who arguably helped invent the entire genre: Hironobu Sakaguchi and Nobuo Uematsu. Fantasian feels like these two old masters were given free reign and a huge budget and told "make what you want", and that's what they did. There is a feeling here, and in some ways it evokes the same feeling I got when I watched The Boy and the Heron, which is the career-capping final film from

My latest review: The grand, epic love letter to 16-bit RPGs that is Chained Echoes.

A truly fantastic love letter to the 16-bit RPG era | Chained Echoes

There is a magic that happens when someone loves an era of gaming so much that they want to commemorate it and pen their own love letter to the feelings they experienced back when they first played these games. Chained Echoes is one such love letter. It doesn't matter what era of gamer you are, the games you played when you were young and free of responsibilities and burdens (or at least had far fewer of them to deal with) will always hold a special place in your heart. The feeling I got from th

RE: https://connectedplaces.online/where-does-community-live/

I want to spit this exact line into the face of the most recent hiring manager who rejected me for not being "technical" enough to run his dev community:

"The bottleneck is not the technical complexity of running Docker but the social complexity of cultivating a community."

Great work from @laurenshof@indieweb.social

Where Does Community Live?

ActivityPub and ATProto both promise to rebuild social life online, but they answer the question of where community actually forms in fundamentally different ways. Protocol design is institutional design, and right now those institutions are being built.

I have been completely charmed by the set piece dioramas that were hand-made for the background environments in the latest RPG I've been playing (and streaming): Fantasian Neo Dimension.

The details! The lighting! The photography! Absolutely gorgeous. Video games, dang.

DetroitPrime's post about Fantasian Neo Dimension

I've recently started playing Fantasian Neo Dimension, and I am utterly ENCHANTED with the physical set piece dioramas that were built for the environment. The level of adorable details that serve no purpose other than to build an immersive world with a distinct style is astonishing. Each little house and room, all built with sculpting clay and photographed from multiple angles to provide a backdrop for the PCs and NPCs to move around in is just so endearing. Check out these screenshots. Each lo
