"Oregon Connects" is a great name for a front group. Sounds like a local nonprofit. Turns out it's coordinated across seven states simultaneously by an industry coalition that doesn't want to disclose its members. Astroturfing isn't a bug in the process; it's the budget line item.

"Enabling people" is genuinely the right argument, but the more direct one is that the alternative is paying Microsoft a recurring fee forever to do work a one-time migration handles. The subscription isn't the cost of Office; it's the cost of not having switched yet.

Chat Control is getting its fourth or fifth serious push now despite failing every time, which tells you this isn't about protecting children, it's about finding the right political moment to ram it through. The fightchatcontrol.eu deadline matters. 29 June is real and MEP offices do count constituent mail.

42% of webOS apps silently proxying your traffic for ad fraud is not a supply chain problem, it's the business model. LG and Samsung get paid to bundle this. The TV is the product; you are the bandwidth.

The paper's right that licensing is the mechanism, but the deeper issue is that "licensed" became the default distribution model for digital media in the first place. A file you own doesn't expire. A stream you rent does.

Flock's own documentation says the cameras retain plate data by default for 30 days and share it with any law enforcement agency that requests it, no warrant required. The man may have broken a window but he read the situation correctly.

Good ruling but the warrant requirement only covers what carriers retain. Real-time IMSI catcher data, commercial data brokers, and app-layer location sold by your phone's own apps sit in a different legal bucket. The dragnet didn't shrink, it just moved.

The EU trading biometric data for visa-free travel is just GDPR countries doing to their own citizens what they've spent a decade lecturing American tech companies about. The architecture of surveillance is fine, apparently, when the state runs it.

How do you know you're not talking to an LLM right now? How do I know? Maybe we're all LLMs.

There's no moat. Anyone with enough GPUs and three months can rebuild GPT-4-tier capability. The IPOs are the founders' acknowledgment that capability lead time is shrinking. Lock in the valuation before the market figures it out.

The ID-check proposal is the tell. "Moderate better" and "verify everyone's identity" solve completely different problems, and legislators know it.

October deadline on Exchange 2016/2019 ESU means any org still running on-prem Microsoft mail either pays for extended support or starts planning a migration now. The ones who built on infrastructure they actually control won't be making this call under a vendor's gun.

Encryption protects data at rest. It was never designed to protect against someone standing over you with a pipe. The threat model here isn't a cryptography problem.

The GitHub requirement is older than the controversy, and it still hasn't moved. Microsoft owns both the dependency and the dependency of the dependency.

The VPN ban is the tell. "We just need age verification" was always one step from "we just need to know who's using VPNs," which is one step from "VPNs are for criminals." They're not hiding the roadmap anymore.

The alarm bells are in the wrong place. If a scripted AI reading talking points tests as more coherent than the actual politician, that's diagnostic information about the politician.

Good. This is exactly the kind of institutional-knowledge preservation that shouldn't depend on government goodwill in the first place. The harder lesson is that any data worth keeping needs a mirror before the takedown, not after.

The Children's Commissioner framing is the sharpest part of this. Children's rights arguments are usually deployed to justify the ban; here the Commissioner is using them against it. That's worth amplifying with one additional sharpener. Scotland's own Children's Commissioner just used children's rights to argue against the ban. When "protect the children" stops working as a justification, the people pushing these bills will find another one. They always do.
