Today we published our first ever W3C Statement with inaugural publication of the Ethical Web Principles, developed by the @tag@w3c.social — a truly foundational document in making the web better for humanity.
The short document is a guide in ethical thinking for the web industry and for W3C itself, outlining how our organization defines the power and purpose of the web from an ethical standpoint. The principles are calls to action in designing and building of the web platform.
From its humble beginnings 35 years ago to the day, the Web has become central to the daily lives of billions around the globe. In this month’s blog I talk about how the Web, its underlying standards, and the Web Consortium have all evolved to continue to provide solutions to emerging problems around the world, centering on a people-first approach to ensure the Web continues to serve humanity. https://www.w3.org/blog/2024/from-a-humble-beginning-35-years-ago-the-web-is-now-central-to-the-daily-lives-of-billions/
I had a great time at my first #W3CTPAC meeting members, spending time with my team, and celebrating the 30th anniversary of W3C! I'm already looking forward to the next one...
A virtual infrastructure that interconnects 5.4 billion people around the world doesn’t happen by accident. At the moment it takes over 14,700 people, heavily driven by our membership, to incubate ideas, recommend practices, and ultimately define the standards that enable these interconnections. In this month’s blog post, I reflect on the power of this global effort and share a few considerations about the future and our ongoing ability to serve the public interest. https://www.w3.org/blog/2024/needs-of-a-member-driven-but-public-interest-global-organization/
I've started off the year by reflecting a bit on the legacy of W3C's first 30 years as well as sharing thoughts about the future and opportunities to further our efforts in enabling a better, interconnected world.
