@doctormo@floss.social it's no surprise that an aging FOSS purist like Linus still sees tech as neutral. I think we need to have serious discussions as a community about freedom zero. It should have been clear to us that freedom zero requires adjustment when the world's weapons and surveillance systems were built leveraging FOSS tech. The Do No Harm license got ridiculed. However, at least it seems clearer to more of us now, in the wake of LLMs, we need ethical open source. We need to rework freedom zero.

@JaxVent@lgbtqia.space at any rate, the best way I learn is first doing the basics with tutorials and a starter project. Then taking an existing project and changing some things in it. TypeScript is also very popular these days but the tooling can be confusing. Go is nice and more scripty but structured. Personally, I've learned with PHP (awful but great). Of course OG C++ or modern Rust if you want to get seriously serious. Might be overwhelming though. You have some areas of interest? Web, CLI, apps, etc.?

@JaxVent@lgbtqia.space not sure anyone else will agree and it's quite dependent what you want to learn. For venturing into code more seriously Python is a solid choice. I find though, that due to its flexibility many new developers adopt bad practices and later work harder to adapt and do things properly. In "higher" programming languages the learning curve is steeper though. So maybe Python but seek out tutorials which focus on proper Object Oriented Programming (OOP). That might be a good middle ground.

@thibaultamartin@mamot.fr and once you account for the dimension of time plus neuroplasticity you realise experienced devs will eventually do it too. Especially when all the LLM products are intentionally trying to make it hard to use them "the right way".
The whole premise is "by the time this generated code breaks, these same generator products would have improved enough to fix it".
Completely disregarding the no.1 tech challenge has been resiliency and redundancy, not faster code generation...

If you're at the UN AI Dialogue/AI for Good in Geneva, I'd love to connect on the topics of ethics, cyber security, environmental concerns, privacy or just to have a chat comment here :)

Apart from everything else (and there's so much else), it's one side of the "AI" debate insisting to drag all of us along, even when we ask not to. Pilfering our data, sticking "AI" into anything and everything, not disclosing the usage, etc. I can believe something is the best thing ever. But I won't force another to do the same. I can try and convince, and even then, depending on the urgency of the issue I would tune the level of my advocacy.
This alone is enough to give all of us a big pause.

@JaxVent@lgbtqia.space web back-end Python or PHP. Web front-end is crazy bananas too many but TypeScript /JavaScript. Apps are more complex, because you can go with iOS or Android native languages or almost any language plus a framework to make it into an app. Picking an open-source app you like and seeing the tooling they went with and going from there could be helpful even if you don't understand why they chose it yet. I'm almost sure for data analysis Pyhon would actually be helpful to learn in any case.

@nixCraft@mastodon.social I use Arch, NixOS, Mint, and Ubuntu primarily (different uses). This is just sad and I'm definitely going to nix (pun intended) my remaining Ubuntu machines. This plus the Linux kernel decision of "it's just a tool" is making me think of migrating to FreeBSD/OpenBSD.
