Once again I am reminded that social media is too important to leave to corporations.
What a terrible thing to do to everyone's generous contributions over the last 35(!) years.
EDIT: ah the founder stepped down in 2025
The time of Xillennials is passing. We shall leave the Internet to the race of man, and return to self-hosting, where the intellectual property will remain unstolen and the subscription fees can not find.
It looks like I'm on the couch doing nothing but really I'm fighting with every fibre of my being to not start a new project. The struggle is very real and super intense. Your love sustains me in this war.
Need to continually sigh loudly during an online meeting but also unable to get full relief from the activity as always having to double check my microphone is still muted.
Dreamed I wrote my own navigation app and the dream ended up with me walking down a pitch black country road with no streetlights tilting my useless phone side to side in a lightning storm several kilometres from my destination while being chased by a serial killer.
Thanks for the vote of confidence in my programming skills, brain!
I wish Terry Nation was alive so I could ask him about Survivors, a post-apocalypse scifi he created in 1975. It's unlike his dalek stories or his show Blakes 7
Interesting wrinkles to it. I don't know if I would call it feminist but it gives equal time to womens' experiences and all the villains are men trying to recreate patriarchal structures
I also think the female actors detected this and fleshed out these threads more than the scripts showed maybe?
Cell Sword, my comedy scifi shooter, is now available for the mostly harmless price of $8 on Steam and Itch. It's a love letter to Descent and I've tried to make it crazy and full of twists. Boosts appreciated!
Some of the astronauts on Artemis are wearing three watches - one to tell the time, one for biometrics and one from their sponsor... never change USA
As part of my work accidentally coded the word "friends" when I meant to type "rainbow"... not beating those accusations that I live in some sort of magical fantasy land divorced from reality
Every day is sunshine and rainbows and fairies when you're a gamedev! 🌈 ✨ 🧚♂️
If you did like Project Hail Mary the book I reckon you'd like 1970s sci-fi classic "The Mote in God's Eye" by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle... no spoilers but it sits in the same hard-sci-fi-adventure zone for me.
Three people have submitted pull requests to pygltflib (an open source python library I manage) in the last month. Some great tweaks and one person even cleaned up the build pipeline a bit.
Everyone contributing just a piece here and there -- open source, what a concept! ❤️
Finally watched the final season of The Handmaid's Tale.
Overall liked this show, not just for being a rare feminist science fiction, but also showing a sci-fi distopia with the women's stories centred. It always felt unique and fresh for that - not bad for six seasons!
On the negative side, the show sort of said everything it wanted to say in the first season or two imo. It shied away from trope-y action arcs deliberately but I can not deny those arcs exist for a reason!
Low Earth Orbit Adventures will be on show and playable at WIP night tomorrow at Sabby Co-op in Melbourne along with other work-in-progress games. If you're around drop by!
Would you drive an amazing luxury car from the 1950s or a cheap car from the 2020s?
Went to the "Am I unique?" browser tracking educational website and it fingerprinted me with only three attributes -- this version of firefox on this version of MacOS in this timezone... it didn't even need my browser window size which was also completely bespoke lol
My personal theory why "stagflation" is so stubborn the last few years is we had 40 years of software lowering prices through increased productivity and lowering costs but from about 2020ish software has now swung round to maximising what it can extract from people.
In a low friction economic system where algorithms have perfect oversight they will always raise prices the maximum they can until they detect the pain threshhold has been reached.
I have no facts to back this up.
My phone and I disagree on the meaning of "Do Not Disturb"
Part of the fun of watching old #DoctorWho is rating the action shots of the robot dog K9 on a scale of 1 to 10 where 1 is "they just pulled him along with string" and 10 is "wow he actually turned a corner under his own power and only bumped into a few things".
I rate this shot from "The Invasion of Time" (1978) a very high 8/10 for K9 dexterity.
I can't do steroids because I'm pretty sure I would be a massive roid-rager.
Already totally natural I can barely contain my fury at the most modest of life's minor inconveniences.
Was hoping to wrap up development of LEO Adventures tomorrow but unfortunately it's only about 80% complete.
Not sure what to do from a project management POV as it is bumping up against a massive project that has to come onto the board and has priority.
What went wrong with the 2005 King Kong film? It's a good film but it is missing something. Maybe they needed more character actors instead of generics. Jack Black is the only one that adds anything to the film really. Everyone remembers the bugs more than the giant gorilla lol
Is it legitimate for a piece of art to define the criteria by which it can be judged?
I'm far enough along on Gaystation Sunside to tell it's going to be another indie game.
I was hoping to get it up to a double I indie or maybe even single A.
It's looking good and all the budget is up on the screen but still some of the edges will be a bit rough.
Lots of progress on #GaystationSunside this month, looking forward to sharing it soon!
Something I find super interesting about 20th century scripted dramas from the UK and USA is how short the turnaround from filming to broadcast. An episode of Star Trek The Next Generation (1986) was sometimes filmed only a month before broadcast. The final episode of Survivors (1975) season 1 was filmed five days before broadcast. Hair-raising.
In Australia they were shown months or even years later so I guess in my head they had this prestige of sitting on a shelf
Have booth for Low Earth Orbit Adventures at a convention next week but thinking of cancelling. I'm not "match fit" for exhibiting. Don't have laptops or banners to take and the thought of sitting there for 12 hours over 2 days for maybe 20 wishlists is not great. Public transport too.
If I had it (laptops, banners, car) ready to go it would be great to meet people and connect with players but to scrabble it together in 10 days is a lot of unpaid work!
Maybe I'm not hungry enough for it! GASP
Tremors (1990) starting Kevin Bacon gets PHDs written about it but Screamers (1995) starring Peter Weller languishes in obscurity despite being a far superior take on the same material (underground monster burrowing worm things that eat people)
