@deankirkman@mastodon.social My experience was a realization, only after being put in an impossible situation. I was already hard of hearing and I had believed that if my employer would just provide me with written documentation, I could do my job.
They said "No we don't have the time to do that or the bodies for compliance." Another co-worker implied that "this job isn't for everybody & you should probably go find something else to do." This went unresolved for over a year. Then COVID hit with mandatory masking, so I couldn't rely on lip-reading anymore.
So I had a mental breakdown. I developed anxiety and took SSRIs. I took an online quiz that spelled it out to me finally, I could be autistic, "on the spectrum" at age 51. When I look at my life through that lens, so much makes sense at last. I feel more empowered now, because now I can take advantage of it, instead of hiding.

@KatyElphinstone While growing up, much of that trauma I ascribed as being "hearing impaired" . I did not have the vocabulary back then, to articulate that which I know now.
