@corafeita@ciberlandia.pt @netbsd@mastodon.sdf.org Crap, now I want one. Are they still useful at all?

"The end goal is to standardise our platforms on AWS but this is not yet a decision made." Suuuuuure. #GetFediHired #HateThisJob #FreeBSD

@pitrh@mastodon.social If only I didn't need that kidney...

Having an absolute blast at #EuroBSDCon as always. Loads of cool people, excellent tutorial on the #CRA and its implications for open source, very interesting #bhyve developments, a fantastic "debut" by Federico Angelilli bringing kernel live patching on #FreeBSD through his #GSOC project. As always I brought some properly obsolete hardware: a 486slc2 running #NetBSD (or OS/2 on request), a Toshiba luggable 486SX2-66 with #DOS and #MonkeyIsland, #DOTT, #Larry, #SpaceQuest or whatnot, and - surprisingly - a Pentium 3-based Gericom laptop gifted to me by @outofcreativity@exquisite.social which is now upgraded from #OpenBSD to NetBSD ;-) #EuroBSDCon2026

So, yeah. Another #EuroBSDCon is behind us, and we're sad to leave. It has been incredible meeting all the old farts and new hopefuls - more of the latter than ever, I think! Great talks in all tracks - including the hallway one. Even some conspiracies for good, which is always fun. There were too many highlights to mention, so I'll just shout a big THANK YOU to everyone who contributed to making this a fantastic experience - again. On a personal note I ask/hope those of you who said hi at the conf can reach out and remind me who you are, so I can connect faces to handles on here. I suck at remembering so you'll have to forgive me for some of the bewildered looks I'm sure I gave some of you. (After that last pic I was afraid someone would arrest us - drinking that beer from paper cups must be an affront to the locals..) #EuroBSDCon2026 #FreeBSD #OpenBSD #NetBSD #BSD #Retrocomputing

Making sure this beast of a #486 is ready for #EuroBSDCon .. It'll run #DOS, #NetBSD and OS/2 - and circles around nothing. #Retrocompuing #OS2 #Slowcomputing #EuroBSDCon2026

Best use of a Mac in 2026: provide power for a #FreeBSD laptop. :D

@rich@mastodon.gamedev.place Simulated intelligence. Like simulated vs artificial diamonds. They look like real diamond but share no useful properties with them - they're trinkets at best. Unlike artificial ones that are arguably better than real diamonds.

@xgranade@wandering.shop And *they* can people snowflakes?!? Sigh.

So I got an interesting #Floppy #Recovery job in my lap today .. a promo floppy(!!) for the band Everything but the Girl .. remember those people? Anyway: badly damaged it seems, hard to get much out of the disk, but I keep trying. Giving #RecoveryWhiskers a good workout with it (thanks for your help and patience, @JennyFluff@chitter.xyz !), will try some more with the straight #GreaseWeazle tools. Learning a lot here! #Music #EverythingButTheGirl (as if anyone is following *that* hashtag...)

Flying for the first time in 30 years. Going to visit the #BSDNL conference tomorrow!

(It was transported as hand luggage, in case anyone wondered ;)

@gloriouscow@oldbytes.space But you want accurate emulation, no? So what does a real pc do if you replace the floppy drive while it's running, and then try to read/write something? I mean you have to emulate white smoke, no? Cc @foone@digipres.club

@opensourceopenmind@social.vivaldi.net This is the case with several high-visibility RCE bugs of late. There's a vague blurb about requiring ASLR to be disabled "or bypassed" - but not knowing what bypassing ASLR entails or the likelihood of that happening, it's really hard to assess whether I should be dropping everything or if I can wait until the grey matter is actually awake. The bugs are bad enough. I hate the sensationalism on top. @ju@social.coop @cwebber@social.coop

@madcollector@retro.pizza Taxi drivers in London can spew misogynist and racist shit at you while calling you "luv" every few second. Especially if you're a woman. "We don't need anybody, luv" (ref. brexit). "Be careful of those black folk, luv" (ref a fucking jazz club). "Maybe stay home then, luv" (ref. whether a given area is considered safe). Love Ian and I wish what he said were true. Instead it feels like it comes from a place of some privilege. :(

@gimulnautti@mastodon.green It is as unsurprising as it is infuriating. Cc @OpenSexism@mastodon.world

@nullenvk@yourwalls.today Thank you - patching my three instances now. Building takes an hour on my 486 so I'll go to sleep meanwhile. :D Cc @grunfink @dzwdz@tilde.zone

@felipe@social.treehouse.systems haven't used Linux since the 90s. Mostly used anything but Linux or Windows since the early 90s. Was a Windows advocate for a short while in my early teens, but hey... who doesn't make mistakes at that age, eh? ;)

@torstein@andeby.city Nydelig. Og så den surmaga kommentaren som nærmest var obligatorisk. Tør ikke tenke på FB-tråden; det må det være mye gjørme..

@eschaton Someone I know is currently using LLMs to fix old games and make them user-modifiable: adding 3dfx/glide support to Descent for DOS and making testdrive3 work on fast computers and have custom cars and stuff. It works. I am appreciative of the end goals, but very much not of the way he's getting there. I cannot imagine how many tokens have been burned - or should I say trees and cubic metres of water? I won't touch the result with any kind of stick, no matter how cool the end result is (seen in total isolation).

@prozacchiwawa@functional.cafe What are you up to?

@gloriouscow@oldbytes.space Only gripe so far is the misnaming of the 90mm drives/disks ;) (It's only a tiny pet peeve of mine..)

@gloriouscow@oldbytes.space This is awesome! Finally a chapter I can have opinions on ;)

@JennyFluff@chitter.xyz This is fantastic. If actual people struggled to understand licensing (and the importance of it), you can rely on LLM agents to actively, unapologetically and without knowing what they're doing, shit sideways on licensing all the way to the bank. And in the process, through the sheer volume of violations that nobody has time, money or energy to fight, the whole concept of licensing will fall apart as the courts and copyright offices will simply give up on it.

@fluidlogic I heard of this and when I did it was instantly and depressingly obvious that yep, that's how it had to go. @histoftech

@mariellequinton@ottawa.place I can't find a single one. :( I feel dumb now :D What are you searching for? Cc @nocontexttrek@mastodon.social

@xan@xantronix.social This is so utterly beautiful.

@aslakr@mastodon.social @gauteweb@mikrobloggen.no I dette tilfellet hørte jeg faktisk ikke hva fyren sa. Eller jeg skjønte ikke ordet han sa. Spesifikt "serne"...?

@hrw Yeah, sorry. Just rubs me wrong. I've signed. :)

@hrw I will fill it in, because this us important. But seriously - Google forms, when there are actually secure and private alternatives? cryptpad.fr for example..

@mbbrutman@mastodon.sdf.org This one has been appropriately abused in the pocket of @evilham@fedi.unchat.cat ... and yes I stole your performance art line *hides*

@mbbrutman@mastodon.sdf.org Check out my apparel while I dig out pics of the cards. The PDF doesn't do it justice. https://fosstodon.org/@foss_north/116482754175077963

@gauteweb@mikrobloggen.no Kult.

@pixelfed the notification box in the ui keeps animating as if it is still loading even when there's nothing to show. It eats battery and cpu. :-/

@evilham@fedi.unchat.cat Eh, this is nothing :-D

@jbz@indieweb.social This is obviously bs. And extremely wishful reporting on Linuxiac's part. The numbers don't add up, there's no way this is linked to desktop, and user agent strings are about the worst source of information these days. Based on my own server logs I'd expect to see OS/2 there. More than 1% of the scraper hits use OS/2 user agent strings. :-D

@bsd_nl@mastodon.bsd.cafe What about yours?

@mirabilos@toot.mirbsd.org It's not the poc that says this though. It's the actual vulnerability itself. If ASLR is on, then it's a DoS. If it's off, it's an RCE. Big big difference. But then comes "..if ASLR can be bypassed", just dangling at the end there like an appendix you need to be an MD to understand the meaning of.. Cc @wdormann@infosec.exchange @cwebber@social.coop

@JennyFluff@chitter.xyz Stolen from your project? Obviously. And Codeberg suffered in the process. Insult on top of injury on top of evil.
