Hooray! This week's #Monsterdon is Sting of Death, so let's look at some fun Jellyfish facts this week.🪼 Basics first. Jellyfish are soft, invertebrate animals, members of the phylum Cnidaria along with anemones and corals. Cnidarians are known for their stinging abilities. A typical jellyfish's jelly-like body (Mesoglea) is mostly water, sandwiched between two thin layers of living tissue. The bell-shape we think of as "a jellyfish" is called a Medusa, and it's just one phase of the jellyfish lifecycle. More facts later this week! 🧠

Check out this Jellyfish (Sea Nettle). The long, whispy parts hanging off the edge of the bell are tentacles, which contain stinging cells. And the long frilly part dangling from the center? They're "oral arms." Oral arms also have stinging cells, but they hang from the mouth, transporting food (planktonic animals and tiny crustaceans) from the water column up into the jelly's mouth. Their frilliness increases surface area for filtering food from the water. Some big jellies have looong tentacles. Tomorrow we watch Sting of Death. Today we marvel at Jellyfish life! 🤓 🪼 Jellyfish reproduction is wacky. They can reproduce sexually (spraying eggs and sperm around) or asexually (cloning) but for me the wildest bit is that after a baby polyp attaches to a surface it develops into a strobila, which is a chain or stack of teeny tiny jellyfish. When they are ready, they lift off the stack, one at a time, and start pulsing. Tiny ephedras! Then they hunt even tinier prey and grow bigger, into medusas. Well, the ones that aren't eaten up. Side note, do NOT pee on a Jellyfish sting! It won't help and may make it hurt more. Ideally, rinse with vinegar to deactivate the stinging cells and pull out any stuck stingers with tweezers. In a pinch, rinse with seawater and use something flat like the edge of a plastic credit card to pull stingers out. Touching them with fingers can make inactive stingers 'go off' in a secondary explosion of ouch. Fresh water can also set them off. #Monsterdon
